Does anyone know the average number of polygons used to make game levels these days. nIm talking of say, the avergae sized level, say maybe a level from Halo or Sonic Adventure 2 on the GC. Im asking this, cos my teacher has asked us to build a level in 3ds max, but we only have a budget of 5000 polygons, which i think is too low, but am not sure what the average is? Anyone have an average?
That should be plenty

I just checked out a few maps from Unreal Tournament, and they were between 2200 and 3800.

So hell, have fun with the 5000.

That depends entirely on the engine. The older the game, the better the chance you''ll need low counts. Newer ones can have hundreds of thousands of polys.

Even the smallest Quake 3 levels had 10000 polygons. A professional engine would be pushing more than 5000 per frame these days. Your teacher might be doing the class a favor by keeping the requirements small. That way you won''t have to spend too much time on it.

cool, thanks
Did q3 do true cruves or were those polys too? That'd make up a lot.
