Genetic Programming in genetic algorithims for ( IE ) in games

Can the limitations of genetic programming (huge search space the GAs have to search for an infinite number of equations)be fixed by using chomosomes with a high fitness value only {leaving out the less fit chromosomes)? In this I mean a Hybrid chromosome that will only ''search'' on a exspression tree its strings made up of fit chromosome, thereby only searching for the fittest of the fit on its tree of evolution. Pertaining to the next generation offspring/cross over, would they be able to carry over the same characteristics, with a fine tweak (a evolution exspression tree its strings made up of the fit of the fit chromosome?/thus shortaning the serch process) Also, being able to halt the evolution of the new generation chromosome with its desired effect(s)? Could this adapted to game IE? If so how would i go about this it? Am I on the right track, or totally off?
