new NEHE logo??

I''ve posted a new "less busy" version of the logo. Thanks for the input. I''ll see what I can do later to redesign to "mesh" with the rest of the site.
The text part is better than that of the original logo, although it needs some tweaking and one or two additional elements. All the rest just doesn''t fit in. A successful logo has to be simple (to a certain extent) and at the same time original. And an ideal logo has to represent the company bearing it in certain ways other than just the fact that it spells out the company''s name. What I mean is that if you ask the designer of Nike''s logo, for example, what that swoosh thing stands for and how it relates to the company, he should be able to explain these things, otherwise it can just be considered another image of another company greedy for money. No wonder MS has such a simple logo. (In case someone reading this is eager to jump in and stick up for MS, then just don''t bother - I know something you don''t...or just don''t realize).

Nevertheless it''s a good attempt and I''m just being so picky coz this logo story opens up a quite recent wound in my soul. Hmmm I think I might even post something about this "wound" in the forums sometime soon and see how many people also have a wound like this. Hopefully plenty.

Anyway, since the issue of improving nehe''s logo has been brought up, let me provide some suggestions:

- The logo should portray itself (ie: the neon helium thing) visually by means of a picture as well as text, which means that
adding a picture of the actual NeHe molecule would be effective. An imaginary molecule is sufficient, although the actual thing would add credibility since it gives a "we''ve got the knowledge" attitude to the company. From my personal point of view if the NeHe thing was written in a "molecular bond" style of font it would be much better.

- A very simple rule which determines a good logo from a bad one is the rule of "adequate simplicity" (I just call it like that). This means a professional logo musn''t be too complicated and there''s a simple way to test any logo to see if it''s simple enough - if it still looks good if printed totally black on white paper, then it''s successfull.

- To spice it up an effect such as an array of ones and zeros could be added to it somehow, to portray that the company is dealing with a field related to the digital industry. The ones and zeros arranged into a certain shape would look much more effective than if they were in the background (the space background doesn''t fit in). Another personal idea of mine is to enclose the actual text "NeHe" into a rotating semi-transparent cube with ones and zeros as a texture. That would produce a good animated logo.

Well, looks like I''ve done it again - posted another huge chunk of text (considering this is such a simple topic). Just want to help out nehe a bit.

Those are some great ideas........I did think of the Neon, and Helium molecules, but didn''t know exactly how to incorporate them. The reason I used the space scene was because he already had a spaceship on the last logo. I just thought it would be appropriate to put the ship in it''s proper environment, and make it look like it was in motion, with the engines. I like your idea of a molecular font. It might be a little bit difficult to do though. And the 1''s and 0''s is a good idea too. I''ll take all your Ideas and try to see what I can come up with. It sounds like you''ve had a lot of experience designing logos. Am I correct? I''m just a rookie, in that aspect. This is the first actual web site that i''ve made an attempt to design a logo for. I''ve made plenty for myself, but just for fun, and nothing that looked very professional. As far as incorporating the logo into the rest of the site goes, I think if the logo is redone, the other graphics would have to be redone as well. The thing is, NeHe said he''s redesigning the site, and we have no idea what he has in mind.........so maybe all the graphics will need to be different sizes, colors, etc.......
Neon Helium actually refers to a type of laser (gives a red beam). That could possibly be incorporated.

Would anyone be interested in a joint effort on a new logo design? I would be willing to work with someone......of course it would be just a prototype logo, but it could be cool having two or three people working on it, throwing ideas back and forth, sharing the .psd files, trying to make the logo the best it possibly could be.

Thanks for the laser idea.......One thing though....isn't it a Helium Neon laser???? Or can it be both Neon Helium, and Helium neon? Actually, it's the most common type of laser we all know. They use it in presentation pointers, bar code readers, etc.....

Well you''re probably right. I guess I''ve had plenty of experience with designing logos, so I can help out, namely with the molecular font design. In fact I could help out with everything if I had the time, but I''ve got my hands full right now. But since nehe is redesigning the site I think that if we go ahead with this without his approval we''ll come up with a logo and a website which don''t fit together no matter what you do, so if nehe says it''s ok, I''ll help out. Otherwise there''s no point in this.

And just to note down another idea: the NeHe molecule could be done by having ones and zeros enclosed in semi transparent spheres for the atoms and red laser beams for the connections between the atoms. Alternatively, the whole molecule altogether can be composed of red lasers, with the atoms being red glows.

Well, I decided to make an animated logo. It still has the space theme to it, but it turned out fairly well i would say.

VXG, I like your first idea.....semi transparent spheres, with ones and 0''s, and lasers connecting them, for the molecules. I tried to find out exactly what each molecule looks like, but had no luck.

About NeHe approving these logos.........well, honestly I just made that logo for fun, but I would be very happy to help him out, if he wants some help with the graphics and stuff. But you''re right, if we spend a long time making a great logo, and then it doesn''t even fit the site, we wasted a lot of time.

What do you think, NeHe?
If you want to be accurate, there is just one little problem: the NeHe molecule does not exist (it''s chemically impossible)... So either you use the two seperate atoms, or you just create an imaginary molecule.
Never say impossible unless you can prove it. Flight was considered to be impossible, just as about half of the phenomena which we take for granted now. Besides, I may not be a chemistry professor, but as far as I know there''s no such thing as "impossible for any two elements to bond together". There''s only "impossible chemical to obtain with our current level of technological advancement". And if it''s impossible then how did the neon helium laser story pop up in here?
VXG - it is impossible, both are stable atoms, and don''t have the need to bond with any other atom.

Death of one is a tragedy, death of a million is just a statistic.
If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.
