The First Ever "Action RPG"

www.danavisiongames.com/NightRise/ NightRise, my most recent project, is what one would call the first ever Action RPG. Think of it as an FPS mixed with some Final Fantasy... on steroids. NightRise uses a Real-Time battle system, but not like Everquest''s. Battles mostly occur randomly, however you can initiate battle yourself on the field. It is very complicated to explain. Anyway, NightRise takes place a few years from now, after the War on Terrorism has ended. The war has put the world into chaos. Government no longer exists, and there is no law enforcement... except for the small militia known as Blindaje. You work for Blindaje as their finest soldier. Throughout the game, you''ll end up collecting tons of items and learning the ancient art of magic. You can see a few of the weapons up at my site (URL above). I don''t have any screen yet, cuz I''m still in the beginning stages. However, I''m getting pretty close... Anyway, thought I''d give some info on the weapons at that site: Standardized Blindaje Pistols: The weapon you start out with. Causes a small amount of damage to opponents. They will soon become obsolete, however, when the opponents get stronger. Semi-Automatic Pistols: Fires two shots automatically per pull of the trigger. Causes 4x as much damage as a regular Standardized Blindaje Pistol shot, and therefore can be used for quite a while. Sniper Rifle: As far as I can tell, this is the first RPG to ever use a sniper rifle. Outside of battle, when in 1st person view mode, you automatically see through the sniper scope. From there, you can snipe off enemies in towns without having to battle them. Only one other weapon in the game can zoom. In battle, it is a very powerful weapon but, since it is pump action, does not have a very fast fire rate. Well, those are the weapons up there. More will be coming soon, but I''m not gonna give away all of ''em. There''s a whole group of weapons that is so secret that I can''t show them off online. You''ll just have to wait for yourselves. Tell me what you think. If you have any comments, you can post ''em here or e-mail me at webdude@danavisiongames.com . Eternity is relentless

I hate to break it to you, but there are already 100s of games that are considered "action RPGs." Deus Ex, System Shock, Zelda, Secret of Mana, Gauntlet, Diablo and Dungeon Siege are just a few games that have been called action rpgs, so I wouldn''t call your''s the "first ever."

I was at lucasarts.com and I was looking at Gladius, a new console game coming spring 2003. It is considered an Action RPG.

Impossible: Yeah, I know. Deus Ex was pretty fast and all, but it was, for the most part, an FPS, imo. Zelda is slow real-time. It never really makes you feel nervous thinking if you''re going to win or not. NightRise battles take place in FF style arenas, so you can only move throughout a certain area. That way, you can''t always just run from a battle. And, in NightRise, you have an endurance meter, kind of like in Diablo, only in this you lose endurance by moving and attacking, making fighting very tricky. As you can see, it''s quite different.

dsage: Our ideas aren''t the same. My game is basically linear, so you can''t choose your missions, but you can choose how to carry them out. In my game, you can go into FPS mode, but that''s only to take care of enemies out of battle, and if you do that you only get 1/2 their EXP. Also, I have been working on this game for a year now. I was planning on doing a game somewhat based on "The Matrix" where you played a new character named Jagzon, but then Shiny started "developing" their game so I scrapped the idea. I read about it during a study hall and flipped. It was really quite a spectacle ;-).

one68: What will make this game successful? I am currently creating it for Win 98, and I''ll eventually be making it for Linux. Also, it may be an RPG, but statwise it is very simple. As you gain EXP, your stats go up slightly. The big way to increase your stats is to train against holographic enemies. By doing so, you can increase your endurance, your endurance drop rate, your defense, your attack power, and your magic power. HP and MP increase at a normal rate with each level. Also, the battle system is real-time and extremely fast paced, making it seem like an action game. It has something for everyone. Hard puzzles, kick-ass soundtrack (which is coming along nicely), cool weapons, plot twists, and an actual plot.

Also, what I have up here is in NO WAY the entirety of the game. Your enemy may be the leader of the largest terrorist organisation, but we ain''t talkin'' bin Laden. It''s somebody else. Also, in the middle of the game, that person does something which changes the game drastically... and I mean drastically! It gets really interesting at that point? Will I tell you? Mais non! That would be giving too much away.

aramstudios: LOL. :-) Well, I don''t know. The first beta is going closed. Very closed, and I''ve already got people for that. After that I''ll be holding a contest. If you win, you can beta. It''ll be a while though. P.S. "Blindaje" is Spanish for "Shield." Cool huh?

Why do you think porting it to Linux will make it successful?
