fur is not going on properly on my bear - Maya 4.0

I created the body using subdivided surfaces in Maya 4.0. I converted it to polygons and added fur but it doesn''t attach properly. I had this same problem before when I created a squirrel using subdivided surfaces. I didn''t convert it to polygons though but that shouldn''t matter. Can anyone help me fix this?
