Anybody remeber what that one version of chess is called with a river in the middle??
Kinda cool - the night types could move like nuts on your own side of the river. But if they crossed it, they had to dismount and lost most of their mobility. That was a blast!

Is it possible to improve chess???
My sig used to be, "God was my co-pilot but we crashed in the mountains and I had to eat him..."
But folks whinned and I had to change it.

Anybody tried playing chess setting up their pieces in opposite corners? I haven''t but it just popped into my mind. Place King in corner then both sides build evenly out from the corner. Leave rules as they are. Your pawns will be moving in different directions and the strategies used normally would be harder to apply to this game. Anyone done this? Btw I''d like to see another Computer Chess game with animations for capturing pieces.
Chess is boring to boring people.
To be a knight in the middle ages you had to know how to play chess.
Also the phrase "KISS" keep it simple stupid is used in the military to not make soldiers think but to just be mindless soldiers that follow orders. :p No wise man would say that stupid saying.
Well if you want to make a new kind of chess it wouldnt be hard.
Just look at what the original chess has and how it moves and add on. If a game is too complex then it will take longer to master and wont be fun for all but for smarter people that don''t have a short attention span.
here is the basic chess moves
1 Soldier (pawn)-moves 1 step foward unless u want to move 2 steps when you first move him from his original starting point, and it attacks diagnoly. But it cant do both at the same time.
2 knight-Moves 1 step horizontal (or vertical) which jumps over the enemy and one diagnol away, (basicaly moves in a L shape). Where it stops is where it attacks.
3 Tower- Moves and attacks verticaly and horizontaly as far as if can.
4 Bishop- Moves and attacks diagnoly as far as it can.
5 Queen- Moves and attacks like the tower or the bishop.
6 King- Acts like the queen but can only move 1 step, and if it is captured the game is over.
---------------
So their is move and attack (capture)
to make new characters we just add or take away some thing.
for instance
1 a character that moves like the knight but moves verticaly and horizontaly in 2 or as far as u think is good, and verticaly 3 or as far as u think.
2 or another that moves diagnoly or and verticaly or and horizontal but jumps 2 spaces or more.
3 and more characters if you add and subtract the basic moves and replace them or add on.
The game can be like the same board, or you can choose which characters you want depending if u want both player to have equal pontis in value of characters or unequal if you are playing a less skilled oppenent that needs the better characters which would make it fun for both.
Basily chess can be improved, be more challening, and be fun. and it doesnt have to be longer or nessisarily have a bigger board
Sorry for typos
take care
-----------
Don''''t say something is great by compairing it to other thing, but by what technology can do.

I actually received a chess board for Christmas a long time ago that had a chess variant included in the box. On one side of the board was your standard chess board. On the back was a 9x9 board. It was set up with the back row set up symmetrically: with two queens (of course, the set came with two queens of each colour), one on each side of the king. It was actually pretty interesting to play.

Landsknecht:
The chess board with the river in the middle is the game of Xiang-Qi (chinese chess). It also features a palace.
Very fun to play, it needs more careful planning to be able to win. I prefer that chess game: it represents the defense of China (red pieces) against the Huns (blue pieces).
The game also features cannons: they move like rooks but to take a piece, they must have a piece between them and the target.
The statistics for obtainig a winning situation are somewhere about:
Shogi: 95% of plays lead to a winning situation. (thus 5% are a draw)
Chess: 90% of plays lead to a winning situation. (thus 10% are a draw)
Xiang-Qi: 85% of plays lead to a winning situation. (thus 15% are a draw)
I am quoting these statistics from memory: they were given by chess teachers. (Since I have never seen a draw in chess, I cannot say these statistics represent the reality of games played).

While many of the ideas thus posted are quite intriguing, some of these ideas sound more like a turn based strategy game instead of a simple board game. I agree with the KISS concept.
As for various modifications such as 3D, they exist. A quick search revealed 33,000 pages (but that''s only 1.2% of the amount returned by just generic ''chess'').
Not to completely disagree with you, perhaps the lack of popularity of such versions (check the download counts of these programs) should be an indication that most people like good ol'' chess. If people wanted something different, then they''d play Advance Wars, or something.

It seems to me that chess is already in it''s best form. It is an extraordinarily complex game that people have devoted their lives to mastering, yet it can be immensely fun when you''re a newb. Still, a chess variant could be fun for a while, but chess has been refined over hundreds of years. It is perfect.

Agreed! Shogi is a phenomenal game

The game with a river in the middle is XiangQi, Chinese Chess, it also has a home palace of 3x3 that certain pieces can''t leave.
Check out Kung-fu Chess, There was an interview with the developers on GD a few months back. Pretty much impossible to play with a real board, but the Java game is Ace! It is turnless, but after moving a piece, it has to rest for about a second before moving again. This opens up a number of interesting x-ray attacks, and nullifies most ''fair'' long-range attacks
KriegSpiel is great, but it requires a referee, you have two boards, and you can only see your own pieces. The referee will tell you if the move you have just made is legal, or if you have taken a piece or if you have been taken.
Search for "Chess Variants" and "Fairy Chess" (chess games with different piece-sets or queer rules) and you should get a good idea.
You may also add a random element, where you get dealt a hand of cards each turn corresponding to the pieces you are permitted to move. This game becomes quite easy to handicap as you can give the lesser player more cards (tf. more options) than the better player.
Another great game is three-handed chess with only two armies, you rotate each turn, so play would be as follows: a=black b=white; c=black a=white... This leads to a fascinating endgame where each player is trying to make the opposite team almost win, leading to a victory in the next turn.
