Good Advice

I decided in 2000 to learn about making games. I started by buying several teach yourself C++ books, thinking that would be all I needed to know. After getting stuck on almost every book mid-way though, I decided to enroll into a college class on programming. This helped greatly, so I continued my education into C++, C++ advanced, advanced data structures, and advanced programming techniques using C++. I then thought this would be all I needed to know before tackling 3D game programming. I started OPENGL tutorials, bought several books, and hit several Internet sites looking for info. What I have learned is that I will have to keep going the higher education route by taking a class on matrix math and linear algebra, and, more likely than not, at least one physics class. Is this more than what you thought you needed to know? This is more than I ever dreamed I would need to know when I started, but now I have a great amount of respect for game programmers, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment as I look at how much I have learned in two years. The advice I am giving is that you should not get discouraged when trying to do something you have always dreamed of doing, just approach it from a different angle, if you keep trying, sooner or later you will achieve your goal. If at once you don't succeed, use profanity and try, try again. [edited by - grandmlee on April 19, 2002 7:32:49 AM]

Good advice and nice proverb!
