but does it contain "DX teaching" portions similiar to the "Dummies" book?
Oh yes. It covers basic DX from the ground up. You could be nearly illiterat and still figure out the ground rules of DX technology with that book. It does NOT, however, go into DirectPlay or 3D theory at all.

No.. Tricks (vol 1) uses DX 6.1, just to let you all in on it. (this is what is used in my tricks book..(
Ok, my bad. The book uses the 6.1 interface, but the SDK on the CD is DX7. I swapped over to 7 so fast, I forgot about that. DX7 has better built in initialization routines than 6.1 and it was eaiser to get something on the screen. But other than that - I didn''t find all that much difference.

I stand corrected... I hate it when that happens

It is good because the basics of DX are the same no matter WHAT version you use. It is also goo because it goes far beyond the graphic API into other areas that relate to game creation.

Here is a bit of info that may surprise you... There is a HELL of a lot more to a game than just how to put a graphic on the screen. So many people seem to forget that and get tied up in thinkin soley about the graphics system. 3 quarters of the books on my reference shelf have NOTHING to do with graphics at all.

And I am 100 percent positive that anybody here that has done this work profesionally will agree with that statement!
