Ok, this is a pretty complex game, and I doubt if I will ever be in the position to create it. Well, I have played alot of MMORPG games, and one thing I noticed people wanted to do was PvP. They wanted to capture castles and fight large battles. The only thing nobody wanted to do was level up. Anyway, putting together a large group of people and going out somewhere is a total pain in the butt. The battles were always one-sided by a large margin too. Anyway, why not create a FPS that is sort of like a MMORPG in style? No leveling, no questing, just battles for castles. One side would assualt the castle and see if they can take it, and the other would defend it. When the castle is taken (like you get to a flag, or kill the lord), the teams switch places and see who can do it the quickest. If you used some kind of networking technology the supported a large amount of players like the Tribes 2 engine, then you could have the servers user created. I would think that 30 on each side would be enough people to have a blast. You could have catapults, battling rams, molotov coctails, archers, ladders, and other stuff. You could have the seige engines take damage, and require some sort of engineer to repair them, the same goes for castle gates, or devices used to operate it. It just sounds like a game I would love to play, and I wish someone would develope it. Heh, or maybe I gain enough skill, money, and help to do it. Anyway, I think most people would agree that it would be a game worth playing.
Oh, forgot to add stuff about the seige stuff. All of it would have to require 2 or more people to move/operate. This would put an emphasis on team work. Make it so the side that has the most team work has an advantage. The seige engines would all have to be powerful enough to warrent 2 to 4 people using it. Another thing that could be done is give each player 4 other soldiers to control. They can choose to make them any class, and direct them to do different things. When they die they come back after a couple minutes or something. This would really make the battles seem large, and would allow small servers with just 8 to 10 on each side enjoy the game.

Hmm.. castle warfare is always interesting. And fun! Stronghold is a recent example, not sure how well it sold though, and there''s some Robin Hood game coming out, and then what about Siege?

Anyway, this "take the fortress" scenario is very reminiscant of UT''s "Assault" mode, just on a larger scale and in a different setting. So it might be easier to just mod UT to your liking. I know you said you are not in a position to do development but a mod can be a lot less taxing than a full blown do it all yourself effort.
Hmm... sounds like Tribes (and of course Tribes II)? though the RPG element is not very strong there.
Pick your favorite:
1. Because they don''t have the time
2. Because they don''t have the knowledge
3. Because they don''t have the tools
4. Because they''re being paid by a company to make a game and can''t do any side games as that would be a conflict of interests
5. Because they''re planning their own game that they like better

As well as castle warfare, you could adapt the engine for trench warfare.

Dark Age of Camelot has Realm vs. Realm combat for higher level characters, where you go out and try to capture fortresses and relics from the other side while defending your own.
I don''t know, just make a mod for RTCW to add swords, skins, and a castle map. I think they have everything else required. Or make a server rule that all you can use is knives! =D

isnt planetside trying to do this?
