how can i read AVI data being sent into a USB port from a webcam and record it in a AVI file? what decoding of the data is involved ?

Does this have anything to do with NeHe or OpenGL?

That all depends on the webcam, they all have different drivers. From my experience if you have a QuickCam there is an SDK available from their site (I don''t have the URL handy).
