Hi, I have an idea for game development but am extremely wary about posting details so far. Please forgive my retiscence but I have been ripped off before. Would this be a safe forum for discussion? No offence intended at all, it''s just me being cautious and very new to this world!
Ideas are cheap, it''s the implementation that counts.

Take care,

I thought after reading my other reply you would come here and actually post something worthwhile, not the same paranoid nonsense. Have you taken a look at this site, at how many ideas are thrown around daily? Design concepts, software architecture schematics (there''s a couple of UML diagrams in the Software Engineering forum), programming tips and tricks - all given out for free daily. Take a look at NeHe. Take a look at NeXe. Note that all submissions to all contests are public domain. And you think anybody has the time to pilfer your pithy ideas?

Ugh. That is sooo lame.

Thanks to Kylotan for the idea!
Yea, we come up with some pretty innovative things in these forums. If nothing else, they get encoded in my design unconscious, and the next game I design may show some of the things I''ve learned on here (especially what people complain about).
Hmm... I only recently decided to even tell people what my debut game is about (Airline Traffic Manager) much less start posting some of the details. However, it was not really out of paranoia from the people on here. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It´s a public forum - if by "safe" you mean that no one will take your ideas and incorporate them into his own, then no.

But as Bill already said, Ideas are cheap. Besides, Ideas are an infinite commodity, you can always have more.

PS: It´s spelled "DEFINITELY".

If I posted some clever new idea on this forum, and someone made a game based on those ideas, I''d be pretty honored. That would be cool actually, if things worked that way.

However it doesn''t work that way. If you posted your ideas here, you''d probably need to hold a gun to people''s heads to convince them to use them. Seldom does anyone want to design and code a game based on ideas by others, especially in the hobby community.

Implementation of the good ideas: Priceless.

I seems rather odd that you come here not wanting to your share ideas, and yet you want other people to share their ideas with you. The purpose of these or any other forums is to facilitate the exchange of ideas. If you are really working on something top secret, work on it by yourself or only with people you know.
*chuckle*
That part had slipped past me.

Actually i can understand this paranoia. Its nice to be able to discuss ideas openly, but i would feel pretty stupid if someone else suddenly started working on a 99% similar game. And yes i know that most ideas arent especially earth-shattering original

Anyway, how do you actually go about copyrighting material? I mean there must be more to it than just putting Copyright 2002 on everything you make, i mean anybody could just claim they came up with it first.
