trueSpace is the easiest and most intuitive modeling program I''ve used and it exports to x files. They still sell older versions of trueSpace pretty cheap, too. I don''t know what version started supporting the x file format but you could use a conversion tool, there are some free ones out there.

If you''re not already experienced with 3D modeling I think 3D Studio Max is pretty complicated.

i picked up 3d studio max in 30 minutes, but i had used some other modelling programs too, so that helped.

3ds max is good but WAYYYYYYYYY expensive, like $3500

if you get gmax and milkshape you can export quake3 models and convert them to *.x with milkshape, which is pretty cheap. Even cheaper with the FREE demo
