hey, come to think of it, didn''t the star cruisers in star wars kinda "sink" when they got shot up real good? wtf?

I think you are refering to Return of the Jedi, where a revel A Wing crashes agaisnt the control tower of a cruiser and it goes down, looks like its sinking, however, it then chashes against the New Death Star, which is the size of a small moon as Han states in a New Hope, the gravity force atracts both the cruiser to the death star, as well as the death star to the cruiser, simple physics I think, in reality, it might happen in a different way, for example the fact that the cruiser turns 90 degrees before descending doesnt seem completelly right . . . oh well I am ranting.

The bottom line is entertainment. Sounds and fireballs in space may not be realistic and may annoy some people who demand realism but...

1) Many people don''t realize that these effects are unrealistic.
2) Many of those who do don''t care.

It would be cool to omit these two if cooler more realistic effects could replace them, unusual physical phenomena that could really happen but most people are unaware of (I''m being vague because I have no idea what this would be; perhaps a wierd plasma burst that pulses for five seconds, goes completely black for two, and then makes the entire sky flash white before dying completely...of course you don''t want your ship to do this...that would be wierd; however a dying star or celestial object or alien machine could do this and it would be cool). However whatever effects you choose they must make the game more fun (unless what other people think about the game doesn''t matter to you in which case fun is whatever you think about it.).

The Moon doesnt have anything to do with the Sun, right?

It is impossible for THE moon and THE sun to do this. However, it is possible, on another world, for A moon and A sun to do it.

while i''m still in nagging mode, i might just as well complain about green/blue screens (no, not ms blue screens). they use them too often in films!
i''m referring to when they are shooting in-car scenes. just put them in a real car and turn on the camera! don''t put them in a non-moving car and paste some video on the background! it always look like crap and normal people CAN tell! (define normal)

a good in-car scene is the long car chase in Bullit. they just did it like this:

1. get cool old cars
2. put actors in them
3. put cameras in them
4. tell the actors to have fun and drive like they did when they were 20 years younger
5. no need to do more than one scene since it''ll be cool and realistic -> they save a lot of money too!

ok, i''ll shut up, for now.

Kwizatz, i think you are right, i forgot about the rest of that schene... good thing too, i hate it when i find evidence that StarWars is fiction...

I''ve often thought that a ship flying by in space could, instead of a whoosh sound, do some kind of electrical interference thing, volume modulated by closeness, and perhaps a doppler shift in frequency. This would be realistic and eventful. Seems I saw that somewhere.

Anyone recall the occasional use of total silence in some Babylon 5 epidose views from outside the ship? I found it surprisingly effective. A real feeling of isolation.

And ever wonder where all those errant/missed laser blasts and particle beams go?

My # 1 gripe: lip-synching universal translaters. Doubtful, for once I''d like to see an alien/translater combination behave like a cheap Japanese film. I suggested such to Star Trek producers...

In space, no one can hear you dream.

ever see the original Dune movie? the spacing guild guys have a translator that looks like a big micorphone (with some extra wiring of course) that translates their words into english and speaks it out loud... but they remembered to put in a moment of delay, and also you can hear the original alien speech that is being softly spoken a half-second before... it was very cool.

I actually though exactly the same thing! Dune rules!
