Is there an easy way make a texture for a sphere to make it look like a basketball? I can''t figure out how textures are even applied to spheres. Thanks

Imagine taking a square piece of paper with a picture of Earth on it, and wrapping it around a globe. Some distortion will occur towards the poles but it will still look decent.

ok, but how do I draw something so that the texture makes the sphere look like a basketball? Is there some program to do this, or some special way to draw it?
