Recently Ive been playing around with a game concept which I think is pretty good, but I need an outside opinion. So Im going to five you a brief summary of this and any input you can give me will be greatly apreaciated. SETTING It takes place in a bizzare fantasy city, populated with elves. This world/city is being invaded by an evil diety through a paralell world where the peoples minds reside. So this diety is invading by corrupting everyones minds, which in turn is corrupting the world. The ''hero'' is presented with the task of protecting this city, against his will, after runs across a ragged old man who claim s to be the fallen guardian of that world. He gives you the power to see into the paralell world. That makes the hero (which I have yet to give a name) the only one that is aware of this mass corruption. Now this invasion of this world will not only be shown through brain washed people buy through corrupted archatecture of the city. The original city is very frand looking with many old greek style buildings. But spreading over some of it, like an infection, is a dark, gothic, mechanical archatecture. I hope I didnt loose you there. Now on to the important part... GAMEPLAY This game can be best desctribes as a 3rd person Action/RPG. The combat will be somewhat like Oni, but more weapon (swords and bows) oriented. I want to have some exaderaded kung-fu style combat. You will cycle through items and weapons in each hand. That way you can equp two swords, or a sword and a flash-bomb or whatever. That is also how items will be used to interact with things. The city I would like to be completely maped, so you ca ngo anywhere, and play a very open-ended game. There will be objectives so the player will have some idea what to do. Scripted sequences and very short cut-scenes, along with NPC interaction will progress the story, and determind objectives. Thats the basic idea. Thanks for your time. PHRICTION
i like the idea, especially the open ended and oni gameplay style parts.

I got up to the word "Elves" and fell asleep sorry

Ok, you should really check your facts before you get snide. Elves have been a part of mythology in the Western World since before the Roman Empire invaded the British Isles. Most civilizations have something LIKE them in their own mythology. Tolkien got them from the same place the rest of us did.

Re: Elves

It doesn''t matter how old the idea is, Nomax''s point is valid... you start off good with "bizarre fantasy city" and then it suddenly gets boring when you use the word, "elves." Use a different word. Make them different. Don''t use the word "bizarre" and then fail to follow through.
I liked it up until the gameplay section. I''d prefer this as an RPG. But it''s your game - do what you think feels right.

Re: Elves...

Maybe use shapechangers instead. The inhabitants could start out with forms that are innocent/playful/majestic (cats, otters, etc), and as they grow corrupted, they take on secondary forms that are more sinister (wolves, jackals, snakes, beasts, etc).

Sort of a two-fold idea:
1) the inhabitants that are corrupted could pretty much seem like anyone else in their human form (except maybe being a little more gruff in their personality).
2) Would give some interesting opponents to fight.

It would (hopefully) appease the no-elves crowd, and add to the alien feeling of the setting.

They''re coming for you!
Actually, that''s good. Reminds me of a Dean Koontz novel with the electronics-implant superhuman type town residents where some are devolving instead of evolving. I just looked, and I think I loaned the book out. Can''t recall the title otherwise I''d provide it. Maybe someone else knows?

i think that storyline you''ve got there is pretty sweet, and i do think elves here would be good, elves are a noble, cultural & in most cases a benevolent race seeing their gradual corruption & the decay of their entire society would have more of an effect to anyone who knows anything about rpg''s.

though like Kylotan i think it''d make kick ass RPG but " Its your game "

Thanks for all the input.

First of all, the elf part is not a extremely prominant part of the game. I should say a race LIKE elves. Or how Scrowubit put it: "noble, cultural & in most cases a benevolent". Thats the idea. So dont condem the game for that small point.

It does have many rpg elements (inventory, NPC interaction, open-endedness, etc) but I did want to have it somewhat as an action game, just out of personal preference really. I definatley don''t want this to be a plain Doom style action/arcade game. I would like it to be very story driven, with complex interesting characters.

The shapechanger idea, Im not to sure about. The corrupted elf..err..umm humanoids, will change in physical apearance, but its difficult for me to imagine changing to animals fitting with everything else.
