Free 3-d modeler
Milshape3D isn''t free but very cheap (about $20 I think) so you could give it a try (there''s a free downloadable demo).
I don''t remember the correct URL but a quick search on google should be enough.

Although I prefer Blender, I had to mention 3D Canvas.
Canvas now comes in three verison, but the free one still has many useful modeling tools. I prefer blender because I like its animation toolset.

I have a list of some free programs on my web site.

Rhino 3d is cheap (compared to many full model/render/animation packages). But its an excellent modeler and a great way to get started. It''ll set you back about $800 though if I remember correctly.
Of course, the easiest way is to actually take a class and get the full student discount. I know through IU, I''ll be getting Cinema 4d for about $175 next semester.

I tried Canvas myself. Hated it. More than what it''s worth, I think. Blender is much better.
