Ok I have 2 questions about linux. I know this is a gameing forum but, I installed Linux on one of my hd''s to make programming C++ easier because I have had it with Windows. I''ve installed Linux Sucessfully however the screen is really messed up. I have Gnome installed on the machine and I want to know how I can change the monitor settings? I''m pretty sure its the configuration of my video card because if I plug an old 1meg trident card it works, but I cant stand having 256 colors so I want my good card on. Any help/suggestions? My second question is LOL What Now? Can any of you recommend a site or a book that I can learn how to use the linux operating system? I have a book called slackware 96 but unless I havn''t looked through all of it, I didn''t really find anything useful. A third question is: I have A lmost O n L ine (AOL), how can I get to the internet? They don''t make an AOL for Linux (I called and checked). Is there any way I can just use my pass name and password to log in using some other method? Or should I try another online service, if so which ones? Any help will be appreciated. Keep in mind I''m a newbie at Linux. I''m looking forward very much to this OS, I cried when they said DOS died (which it really hasn''t I still spend more time in DOS then windows), and I''m tired of this bluescreen of death every time I try to compile. Hey, i''m still learning Linux too, but I may be able to help. To set video mode etc. run ''xf86config''. There will be a section on what video card you have, and what modes/bpps you want. As for internet, one thing you have to have is your isp''s DNS server IP address. Windows has an option to automatically fetch it, but unfortunately not for linux. I''m not too sure how to actually dial out with a modem, as i''m on a network, but there should be a PPP-howto on the net somewhere. I hope i''ve been of some help =)

You''ll have to mess with the X config file (located in /etc/X11/). If you''re using XFree 3.x, the file is /etc/X11/XF86Config. If you''re using XFree 4.x (likely), it is either the same one or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (if that file is present, it *is* that one).

You could also use some "built-in" programs to make your life easier (as root), like "xf86config", xconfigurator on RedHat, Sax on SuSE, etc.

http://www.linuxdoc.org has a good deal of online books, howto''s etc. You''ll want to check it out as it will likely answer most of your questions.

As for AOL, sorry, I''ve never used it, so I have no idea. Maybe linuxdoc will have something about it. Any ISP will do as long as they don''t require some odd proprietary software to work.

Not sitting at a Linux-box at the moment I am running the risk of being slightly inaccurate, but here goes:

Run the X-configuration tool. Probably named XConfig or XFConfig or something like that.
Alternatively you can manually edit your X-config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config, possibly /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 if you''re running XFree version 4.x)

I''m still looking for AOL altough I''m getting highly doubtful (They offer a crummby service to begin with, what makes me think they offer multiple OS support?). You can connect to AOL in the same way you''d connect to any other ISP. You don''t need special software to do it.

But if you have a winmodem, you have some hard times ahead of you...
