Hi All! I'm wondering how to publish my future game in steam (I've made many iOS/Android games prior to this and now am working on something more in-depth that I've put a lot of soul into), and am wondering how to avoid the “throwing the game off a cliff” scenario where it will get like 5 downloads.

  • is using publishers worth it??
  • should I make a steam page if I plan to find a publisher later on or do I need to find one now?
  • any further advice/insights also appreciated

is using publishers worth it??

They provide many services, and it's at a cost. Sometimes the cost is direct, sometimes the costs are hidden. Being worth it or not depends tremendously on what services you need, what they provide, and what you negotiate to pay for them.

should I make a steam page if I plan to find a publisher later on or do I need to find one now?

Steam is a publication route. It is certainly easier to make the page now and decide you don't need it than it is to discover someone is squatting on a page with your name on it. There are costs for creating it, so it is ultimately a decision for you to make.

any further advice/insights also appreciated

Go read some books about business management, starting businesses, and developing a business. Also read online about business management. The questions you are asking suggest you are trying to educate yourself, but need a long way to go.

I would highly recommend looking through the articles on the site linked-to below, starting from the entries in August 2021. (i.e. from “Levelling the Playing Field” upwards.) It contains a plethora of advice on a variety of topics, including pitching, marketing, and more!
