@undefined Oh, Bregma! That takes me back, “punched cards and graduated to using ed on a vt100” We used punched cards in college; had to buy blanks from a vending machine! And my job from 1985-2000 used VAXes for the first ten years because they were still more powerful than PCs. It's been quite a wild ride, working in computers! And now everything I now is shit. And I know nothing about what's going on currently. What other profession progresses so fast? None.

I've been googling game engines, and I see now how off base I am. I am still living in the 80's and totally missed how game engines and graphics cards have come along and now do all the hard work for you. The computer world moves so fast; I've been completely left behind. I'm going to continue my project, but it won't be a “game engine”. I'm sure that's beyond my ability, now that I see how far things have progressed. My main idea is to create a world automatically, have it be a simple grid, but when you get to any edge, it writes the current map to disk and generates a new one along the edge you're at, so the world is created as you go. Just playing around; it will never be a game. I'm trying to make the terrain animate, too. The water ripple, the grass and trees wave like there's a wind. More of an outdoor simulation, maybe, than a game!
