I want to make a classic RPG adventure game of reasonable size for mobile platform in Unity. The general game mechanics outline I have in mind is about 3 to 4 player class types (warrior, mage, hunter etc..), levelling, stats, skill trees, items, armour weapons, trinkets etc, quests, day/night system, world map with many different regions of varying environment each being a level with their own dungeons, towns, npcs, enemies etc. The general view will be angled top down. I like things to look reasonably good, and the gameplay must be engaging and intuitive for the player to create a enjoyable experience.
I am a programmer with some modelling/animation skills but for a project with this size I would like to form a team of 2 to 4 to keep things tight and productive. One programmer, one artist and maybe a design and sound person.
I have spent a few intensive months on unity prototyping this kind of game for Android/IOS and have generally got to a point where I think the visual quality and hardware performance is a good balance. This is in terms of being able to have a reasonable number of animated characters on screen (10 - 20'ish is about the target for interesting battles/town scenes etc), day/night system, rivers/lakes, terrain variation (hills/ cliffs etc), lighting, effects and shadows and not killing the user's phone in the process.
My general idea is that I would handle the coding side, and the general terrain modelling for the various scenes (there is a fairly strict process to this to part of the asset workflow such that it will work with the lighting, shadow, day/night system), and a 3d artist would handle general scene models, character modelling/animations (the playable characters will each need a dozen or so animations to handle abilities etc, most enemies just a few as with NPCs). With targeting mobile things will generally be more towards the low poly, low texture resolution end of the scale (and animations don't need to be perfect either as the on screen size is fairly small there is a fair amount of tolerance) and there will be a lot of re-use of characters etc (especially for NPCs) so I envisage 20-30'ish animated characters models.
Anyway, the most important thing would be to form a productive and harmonious team and the core is the programmer and artist in terms of the heavy lifting to make it happen which is why I would like to find that person before proceeding (although any design/sound people can register their interest if they wish). If I can find someone who has the skills and commitment then this project is worth pursuing further. It is a big challenge though so mostly above all I would want a partner in this project to be passionate about making this type of game because I think that is what will come through in the final product.
