A volunteer game project is looking for an Art Director to join us. This person would act in a top-level position and would provide direction and leadership to the artists on our team. The ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about game development and “putting it all together”, but doesn't have the confirmed experience to get hired in the industry in this role. Expect the artists under your direction to be students or hobbyists themselves.
We have already started developing and are starting to ramp up production. While figuring out our team, it has become clear to us that what we don't have is a strong lead on the art side and are looking for someone who can delegate production across the art disciplines. Because we are doing this as a passion project, we do not pay nor do we intend to make sales on the final project. Our team is completely remote, with members in France, Canada and Italy so far.
The game is a non-combative foray into life within a dictatorship where the player must find ways to manipulate their environment in order to escape. It is played in first-person with the manipulation of 3D props in a physical space being core to the game. It is not designed to take more than a few hours to complete, but the length and scope isn't completely defined yet. Our goal is to “definitely launch a high quality game experience” within some reasonable time frame, also to be defined based on the manpower and skill set that we can procure.
The ideal candidate will:
- Have a high level of familiarity with the Unity Editor.
- Be familiar with the art processes and tool chains involved in game development.
- Be proficient in at least one art-related discipline (modeling, animating, texturing, etc.)
- Set, maintain, communicate and enforce standards to the rest of the art team (art style, poly budget, asset requirements, etc).
- Scout for other art talent as we need it.
- Communicate primarily in English.
Nice to have:
- Experience using source control, such as Git. We are currently planning on moving away from Unity Collab.
We communicate primarily over Discord and there is no formal time investment requirement for our members. However, it would be nice for the Art Director to be able to stay in touch as they would probably spend much of their time communicating with other members. :D
If you happen to be interested in this role, please contact Omi#9823 on Discord via direct message. I can share more information about the project there. Please be prepared to provide examples of:
- Your personal artwork.
- Any games that you have worked on, published or otherwise even if incomplete.
