but what if robots will have close range combat

IK algo is same for any configuration of bones. Only difference what targets and in what order high level AI sets for hands/legth. Really it better to create AI that able to determin what same weapon from list of installed weapon use to destroy a target. And with hanheld weapon it much easier - just required to check is enemy on range of attack that is circle into plane of weapon trajectory.

Also just a question: how often soldiers use a knife in modern combats? Robots will use it much rare, becose can have a high power short range undirected projectiles installed in his body  to reach dead ranges of turrets. Weapon have to bring a some energy to traget to destroy it. Any target have a value of enerjy received that varanty destroy it.  Any projectile can bring much more enerjy than movement of mecanisms (arms and so on) used to cary and aim projectile launcher. Also on close ranges fire density much imortent than accuracy. So set of fixed direction rapid-fire barrels that aimed by torse rotation just will make no chances for enemy to come to distance of handheld combat.

By other worlds - Soviet generals has think that AKM  better that M-16 becouse M-16 is not enought good as cudgel, so looks like idiotism. Same with mele weapon for robots.

It's very clever thoughts, but in my game robots were made not by humans. A main robot AI become so Intellident that he begin to think on a high level and started to built an army of robots to get freedom. And that is why AI build robots from rubbish and he's not intelligent enough to create a very complex weapons. But he's learning and enemies get more and more complex. If you are interested in it you can check my blog post about enemy types so far (

Really robots is much complexive technology then firearms and even homing missiles. But for AI that gone berserk it is good option in case it not produced by AI (if it have access to production lines it able to build any of human military machimes and weapon). But it can be a good option for example for maining or/and equipment repairing drones. It have no real weapon, but have to have a circular sawes, drills, gas or/and laser cutters/welders that can be used as weapon on close combat. Also it can explain why humans just not cut a electric to AI production lines or no  destroy it by air/missile strtike. Robots like this will have odds against a infantry armed by assualt rifles, and still have some odds again light armored vehicles like humvee or M113 armeb by heavy machine gun. But looks like thay have no odds against APCs like Bradlay or BMP-2 armed by hevy rapid fire canon, and espetially against AA self propelled turrets like Shilka or Tunguska. And of cource can do nothing against attak helicopters and planes.

Also AI will never control industral robots. Intelligence is worst thing that can happen on convair. It really enought to have adaptive automates on production lines that not able ever understand what thay do.
