I want to create a Horror Game for either PC or Mobile, but I don't know where to start. I have more experience in Unreal Engine than Unity, however, I see a lot of Horror Games created in Unity especially for Mobile.

  1. Which engine would be better for developing Horror Games?
  2. What is the design process for developing a Horror Game, for example; Planning, Research, Ideas etc?

Hi Omniscient Games,

is this going to be the first game you develop?
How much experience do you have in game developement and software development?
A lot of the advice you are going to receive depends on your answer to this.

Maybe you can explain a bit more about your project and background?

As a general answer.
Both engines support mobile games. Horror or otherwise.
The developing process for a horror game is the same as for every other game and to some extend every other software project.

I'm also interested in knowing more, but I only have a little knowledge in game development. Maybe you might wanna come out with some sort of tutorials afterwards on a specific topic xD

Hello, it’s not about horror game only. Before developing any type of game you need planning first, and when we come to horror games you need to keep all the things in mind including what characters you will involve, different levels and puzzles, the most important part is story else anyone can easily get bored.

You also have to focus on the stuff you want the user to see, so you need to work more on technical stuff, and the sound is also an important part.

A friend of mine worked on a horror game that was released last year - Home Sweet Home. This game is developed in Unreal Engine rather than Unity. In fact, they switched from Unity to Unreal as Unity was not performant enough for visual they were targeting, I heard. They are not targeting mobile platforms however.

If you happened to be from a country with quite rich culture (like me, which is Thailand), you will find some interesting story that might not be very well known internationally. I think you can start from that and expand it to area like game play, story, etc.

In fact it doesn't have to be folklore. For example, my ex-colleague told me once that his home town is the place where Texas Chainsaw Massacre took place. That can be pretty interesting as well, don't you think.
