FYI, you DON'T HAVE TO buy assets from the store. An alternative option is to learn to make your own assets. At the least, you can make some really simple stuff just to get things started. There is plenty of free art out there to help in this regard. I personally don't think you should buy anything until you actually need it(and can justify the expense).
Engine Switch

Don't take this the wrong way, but this is more than likely a mistake that you've made somewhere, and not the fault of the engine you chose. The engine is just a tool, and it's up to you to utilize it appropriately. I agree with some of the comments already made that maybe Unity is a better starting point.

Not sure what gave you that impression, but that's not true at all. If your goal is to build portfolio pieces to help you get a job, there's no reason not to make 2d games if that's what you want to do. If anything, it's probably easier/faster to do that, and a better way to quickly demonstrate your skillset. Jobs in game dev aren't really about the end result, it's about the skillset you put forward, which, in a vague/general sense, is the same in 2d as in 3d.

Get that and you can do 2D games fairly easy, easier then U4 and Unreal, and there are plently of free resources on the internet, no need to spend any money.
I have experience on 2D games with libGDX (Java) and cocos2d-x (C++) and I really like them to make 2D games. But my impression it's that to go into the industry, Unity is one of the most used engines and it can give you more oportunities.
About art, you can use any of the existing art (see its license before ), buy assets and even, if you prefer to make it yourself, think that you can start with a simple style. There are tons of games with minimalist style, that it's a good starting point.
