C++ and SDL2 Tile Collision

Shinrai, I strongly suggest you re-read the above replies. I did provide a very easy method by taking the players position and dividing it by the tile size to confirm which location in the array to check. This is the fastest way you'll be able to do it because you never cycle through the array, and only check by using the [y/16][x/16] values to see what tile number is at that index.

You'll need to check the x, and y values to see if they're whole numbers or real numbers to confirm if you're checking more than 1 index. You can easily make a function to do the additional checks if x and/or y is not a whole number, you'll have to check the number +1 to the whole number to see if the player is taking more than one tile space.

This is an example ( you use - 1 due to 0 based indexing ):

This is the most straight forward way to do this when comparing to an array's index, and not object bounds themselves.

Also, make sure your drawing is happening correctly. You should be loading all your tiles into one texture object, and drawing a section of that texture which represents the tile piece onto the screen, do not make separate objects per tile spot, or tile. In your draw loop, only draw tiles and objects that are in the current camera view, do not render the entire tile map.

This method works great, but I am running into an issue.  When the player moves to the edge of the map, the game crashes because of a segmentation fault.  I'm guessing this is because an array index that doesn't exist is being checked.  Anything you think I could do about that?

 

Side note: Yeah, I'm using that exact method to draw in order to improve performance.

You can check this before ever accessing the array by the following check.


if (((x / tileSize) - 1) > 36 - 1 || ((y / tileSize) - 1) > 40 - 1)

Then you know either the X or the Y position is unable to be checked with the array. This is just a very basic example to see if you'll go out of bounds before moving forward.

(The - 1 again is due to 0 based indexing)
