Hey all,

So as the title implies, I'm currently trying to model armor for a man who's overweight. The problem is that most armor tends to be modeled on fit people. Has anyone done this, or does anyone know of places where this has been done? I'd love to get some pointers for where to start on this. Mainly my problem is that the armor I make always seems to be far too awkward. Thanks all.

I would heavily recommend looking at references for Smough's Armor (Dark Souls Franchise). Dark Souls 3, in particular, has at least several sets of armor designed to fit people that either large or overweight. Here's a reference to Smough:

My reference is based off of a concept art sketch I made (attached). It's not exactly meant for an overweight individual, but it was meant more to be a starting point.

I did not know about that character, but his armor also is interesting and an interesting starting point in some ways.

The thing with fat is, it's not the same shape on everyone. You should establish just what your guy is shaped like with sketches, then draw the armor over top.

Oh I see your point about fat distribution on the male body. Yea I suppose I should just try to draw on top of the character.

I posted mainly to see if anyone else had ever made armor like this and if they had any ideas how to make said armor look cool and intimidating instead of awkward.

I'm seeing Marvelous Designer used more and more for character clothing designs. You can attach some fabric elements (jackets, padding, straps, etc) onto the hard surface elements and answer the question how it would actually be worn in reality. You can also stretch some fabric elements over the character's body and then export them as a new mesh to be combined into your final armor model.

Well with armor in general, it's often a visual metaphor. You want the guy to look intimidating, try thinking of him as a tank or a battleship or a boiler that may explode if you piss it off. Other possibilities might be a giant poisonous toad, a boar, or a bear. Plants too are options, like a haunted tree or a jack-o-lantern. Or you might want to emphasize that this guy is so unstoppable that he can wear chains or thick rope and they don't even slow him down.

It doesnt fit? it doesn't make sense? are you making the concept? MD is the best tool for cloths, maybe leathery stuff too, but I would reserve it for details and not so much for concepts. I'm on the train that sculpting might be the easiest and most straight forward way to get a concept and then a model out of nothing.
