PT development petition

Since the link mentions crowdfunding, I'm curious what kind of crowdfunding would work for that scale of a game.

Conversely, I think if people saw how much crowdfunding is needed they'd be shocked. Modern games require tens of millions these days, big releases like this can easily reach the hundred million mark in costs.

Given their status, it might be interesting as a preorder alternative. I don't imagine them making what people are crying for as a $60 game multiplied by the projected sales numbers. Perhaps, tiers of $80, $100, $150, is effectively a preorder, and perhaps reaching $40M in backing would fund the project.

So I signed the petition because I love surreal horror and honestly think that PT, despite or perhaps because of it's small scope, was one of the most interesting and stylish horror games I've ever seen. Admittedly, a lot of the elements and techniques in PT have been use previously in non-games by people like David Lynch and Guillermo del Toro himself, but I think a lot of them haven't been used in games before, and the execution is so effective that I honestly was not at all bothered that there were things I've seen before.

That said, I have mixed feelings about Silent Hills as a full game. Norman Reedus is a really interesting addition, but I'm not sure how well he'd fit into a game that has the same style as PT. I think the fact that PT was a distilled experience with no meaningful characters and an incredibly obscure "story" was one of the reasons that it was so good, so I think turning it into a long-form fleshed out story might be impossible without completely changing the feel of the game. I'm also worried that, even if the game does get made, the fact that the team has broken up and the budget will likely be more limited might seriously hurt the game's quality.

On one hand, a game that doesn't quite live up to the teaser is probably still better than no game, but if it ends up not being successful, it might scare people off from attempting to make this sort of game in the future.

It's possible it could raise enough to keep the developers see the project as profitable. Yooka-Laylee reached over £1,000,000 in a single day on kickstarter.

Agreed. It doesn't necessarily need to fund the game in its entirety, just enough to tip things back into development.

Though, I don't personally usually sign these sort of things (they generally seem ignored :P). It's also possible their sole motivation for canceling the game isn't whether it would be profitable or not (though, it probably is :P).
