I used to love JRPGs but I think that genre is pretty stagnant now. I love the big open worlds of Fallout 3 and Skyrim, I also really enjoy Dragon Age. So basically more western RPG's. I am sick to my teeth of indie 'pixel art, rogue likes' too. That wasn't your question though. I am really enjoying Elite Dangerous, love space, and I like 4x games and strategy like Beyond Earth/Civ V, those games can suck up hours of my time.
What's your favorite type of game, currently?
Currently if I'm playing a game, there is only one: Dragon Age Inquisition.
Once I've beaten it a few times I'll move on to whatever is new and shiny.
Typically I prefer strategy games and tactics games, depending on if I'm feeling high level or low level at the time. Often turn based board-game style games (e.g. Civilization) are fun for the general simple strategy stuff, slow turn-based numbers-heavy RPG games for the tactical stuff. NetHack has been in my life for over two decades, and is always there when I need that type of game. Occasionally I'll go for various life simulators, I'm a deviant personality who has killed off way too many Sims.
I strongly dislike twitch games and first person shooters.
I also strongly dislike games where memorizing the map is a critical skill. I won't play games where I'll be called a noob because I don't know how to use a double-jump plus rocket launcher to reach the errant-pixel exploitable sniping location somebody discovered.
There can and should be a plot but following it should be optional, the game for me is about discovery.
I haven't been able to put down just cause 2, fallout new vegas or gta v for a long time because there's always something new to find, especially on just cause 2...

I am into building/simulation games as well, Simcity 4 is the best game ever imo and I don't expect a better game in next 20 years.
Apart from Simcity 4 , I like to play Railroad Tycoon II and openTTD.

I used to absolutely despise rouge-likes, but after purchasing Risk and Rain and Dungeon of the Endless I am now addicted to the damn things.
X3 Albion prelude and Litcube's Universe total conversion. LU fixes pretty much all the problems of X3 and adds endgame overarching goals/massive threats, and I've always loved management/simulation games, and X3 is basically the ultimate management game.
Other than that, my GF and I are playing Saints Row 3, League Of Legends, and APB:Reloaded.
The last 3 years, my gaming focus has shifted significantly. I hardly ever play AAA anymore.
Space Engineers is the closest game I've played to a AAA recently (and I've scored over 200 hours of play time since its release).
Otherwise, I focus on light 4X Play (Planets.nu), some X-Com (ok, that's probably close to AAA territory?),
Otherwise, FTL, Gnomoria...
And with my daughter (that's generally how I get some time to actually play!):
Gratuitous Space Battles, Shovel Knight, Illusion of Gaia, Super Mario Bros (Wii), Zelda: A Link to the Past
