Hello

Can someone more skilled point me to the some "best" (nice) general sound libraries? Commercial even. Im looking for a general sound pack like footsteps (wood floor, snow, grass, mud), door open close, car noises, crowd noises etc. just some general collection of most used sounds in entertainment industries... There has to be something?

Thanks for help.

I don't think he has everything you need, but check out this guys collections for some great SFX packages that are amazing value and support charity:

Hmm... thanks for tip but i do not see really "general universal, most commong sounds" type collection in his list of collection, i would really love such one, is there anywhere on the net commercial...? Has to be...

Check this out:

General (old): http://www.sound-ideas.com/sound-effects/series-6000-sound-effects-library.html

General HD (new): http://www.sound-ideas.com/sound-effects/the-general-hd-sound-effects.html

The newer version has better sounds but, of course, is more expensive. I've got the HD one and it's really quite nice.

There's also the SFX Kit which has some alright sounds but is really quite dated at this point: http://www.sound-ideas.com/sound-effects/the-sfx-kit-sound-effects-library.html

I've got a ton of the packs from Sound-Ideas library and they're really the best. The other big one (which is also quite good) is Hollywood Edge. Between the 2 of them they really have every sound effect you can think of. You're still going to have to do some foley and make your own stuff pretty often, but you can do the majority of just about any project with these libraries.

I agree with the people above me.

Also they are not general purpose but I am in complete love with the BOOM ones.

Thanks for all suggestions, keep them comming if you have something new :-).

BTW, what if i would like to record my own sounds (real life like door opening, etc., nothing "alien"), what equipment would i need? It would be an indie game so do not suggest something really expensive... Can i get away with some stereo dictafone with (additional) "targeted" (im not sure of the proper word) microphone?

The most basic setup is probably a Zoom (I started with H4n, now they have H6n but they also have lower models like H2n) or equivalent from another brand.

Get the accessories with it if you want to do outdoor recordings (windshield + handler) and you should be good to go.

It's not super cheap (around 350€ accessories included, I think when I bought it) but really cheap microphones are really bad.

Also I don't know about H6n but H4n has phantom power at 48 which means you can use is to power up a great microphone with it if you one day decide/have the money to buy one. You will then use it as a recorder without using the mics on it. Saves you from spending the cost of a big mic + the cost of a recorder.

Ideally you want a Sennheiser 416 Shotgun mic ($1000). It's the best for foley and is useful for ADR and things like that as well. You'll want a small and well treated room because foley is usually very high gain. You'll also want a clean neutral preamp, I'm a fan of Grace pres for foley ($1,200).

On a budget you can get a Rode NTG-2 ($250), a studio Projects Pre ($180), and the smallest, quietest, carpeted room you can find that's far away from anything with a low rumble like a furnace or AC system. It won't be ideal but you can still make a lot of good foley with budget gear.
