People still thing that changing flag/currency/nameOfCounty could make their lives better, with the same hassles/moorons/criminals/bigots at the power? A good plot for a Tarantino's movie...

While those specific things are unlikely to make a difference, having local control of decisions in government can help make the people's lives better.

It could help if having those power in a local context make sense. More economical power (that means more economical responsibilities and duties) could make sense and improve the local people's lives, but screwing an entire county don't.

I live in an "autonomous province", and here things are a little better than the rest of the country, however becoming an independent and separate country will not help us in any way, rather it would screw up everything, like industrial policy, import of raw materials, export, retirement policy, national and internal security, energy power policy, education policy and healthcare policy, agricultural and food policy. Becoming completely independent would not grow here the salaries up. All those things must be taken in a more global, common and shared context (at least here), especially considering where and how sadly is the rest of the world going.

I don't live in Scotland, but (as far I know) they far away to be independent from UK in a lot of those things. They should ask pretend more local power, especially economical control, but don't believe in the local politician that only wants a bigger wallets in their pants. People should bury their ideology and open their eyes to see how the real world is.

I personally don't care one way or the other because it has no bearing on me. The thing that I wonder is how widely recognized would its independence be after getting it in the rest of the world? I mean, UK would likely update their maps to show UK and Scotland, but will Europe and the rest of the world recognize it or continue to make their maps showing it all as UK.

Why on earth do you think they wouldn't?
This isn't some sort of separatist movement which has taken an area of land and declared themselves a country, this is a legal process of undoing a treaty from 300 years ago...

Also many maps will likely already have England, Scotland and Wales indicated on the landmass which makes up Britain so it isn't like it's a massive undertaking.

for anyone interested, the counting of the ballot papers has started... you can see the results live here:

I'm just stating what I was taught in high school '96-'00, which I suppose it could have changed in 14 years, but when I was in school our government teacher told us that the nation (US in my case) had to acknowledge the independence before they would bother updating their maps and just because the nation (in this case UK) acknowledges it doesn't mean other nations will. The US likely won't update our maps until we have communication between us and Scotland (if it gets its independence).

EDIT: Looks like it will be a no, according to the link dsm1891 posted.
