I was wondering - what is the most over the top desktop computer you can build from parts catalogs such as NewEgg or TigerDirect that would cost under $10,000 USD ?

H8Qgl-If-O quad socket mother board - $900

AMD 6320 8 core processor * 4 - $1,200

GTX 690 graphic card * 2 - $2,000

8 GB DDR3 240 pin RAM * 16 - $1,040

Intel S3500 SATA3 240GB SSD * 12 - RAID 10 - $3,900

IBM 900w power supply * 2 - $880

Total cost - $9,920

At this point in my life, I would just buy the Mac Pro. I'm sure you could squeeze out some more performance / dollar. But you'll probably not be able to get it into the same form factor or convenience level.

Huh. I would've at least gone with a quad of GTX Titans. And I don't think that junk IBM power supply you linked even connects to anything recognizable. Try this instead:

Also you forgot to pick a case, or cooling. I'd also put a couple of these on the invoice:

Can't have a desktop computer without monitors, after all.

Depends on what you want to use the machine for. A box for gaming wouldn't necessarily be the best for development and vice versa, although realistically with that kind of money, whatever you build will handle both easily.

I think it's pretty reasonable to spec out a pc without a monitor. Most people already have a monitor.

Yep, the goal of the system can really make or break your performance per dollar factor of a machine.

I worked on a project that involved a lot of rather weird data processing, and we were struggling to handle the number crunching in the time frame we had on a 200 node core 2 quad based cluster. We looked at investing in a new smaller cluster to dedicate to the project, but one of the engineers came up with a custom massive parallel thing using a thousand 'obsolete' ARM chips someone had sitting in a warehouse that we put together for a few thousand in extra parts (And a very well equipped electronics lab).

It is based on 200mhz chips, but still crunches the project's numbers faster than far more modern and expensive computers can do.

I've actually been thinking about this alot lately, as I just recently built a system.

For over the top, I would probably use a Cooler Master Stacker, and use extra space for water cooling and maybe 6 or so extra SSDs.

Ehhhh...I have a beef against AMD. Even though intel usually costs twice as much, you can get more than twice the performance out of them.

Stay gold, Pony Boy.

I have the same motherboard and hard drive :D

You can add a razer mouse and two old crummy keyboards to complete the build.
