You can use any basecode you like
To load jpg, there are lots of free source library you could use code from. Well, I know JPEG is hard to load, so, I didn''t think that way, I was thinkin more about TGA''s.

Anyway where should I post the final program?

"You can not use scripting languages, pluggins or any other type of premade OpenGL library."
Does this also include GLUT?
Does this also include GLUT?
Im wondering if a game programmer like me from New Zealand can participate in this competition....

- Actually I''ve have said this was fine; symbolic stuggle, bit of humour... nice! Thanks for the idea! What''s wrong with a "concept" entry? Prog rock meets OpenGL... hmmmm...
And, yes, I am tired

-=aSe=-
Just wanted to leave a post because I haven''t left one on this thread for a while
Well I''m glad there''s a lot more interest picked up in the competition! Simply because I like a challenge
Encourages me to work harder to produce this demo to the best of my ability - I suppose in some weird way you could call it motivation!
Just to clear a few things up...Dont take my word on these things as I am in no way affiliated with Neon Helium Productions! However, I feel there are some things we (That is, the entree''s) can safely assume for the sake of saving time (Which let''s face it, is of utmost importance in this situation!), and for the sake of leaving Mr.Molofee and SKSlayer alone!!! *g*
1) I have assumed from day 1 that I can use DevIL because yes technically it -is- a premade library which is related to OpenGL, however it''s open source and it -only- loads images as OGL textures. In other words it is an exception. I could not lease the Quake3 engine and submit a demo here which shows off the Quake3 engine. That would be both stupid and useful to noone. If you wanted a general rule to go by, I should assume that if you have the source code - it''s allowed in the contest *g*
2) GLUT. Ok you''ll have to check with Mr.Molofee or SKSlayer but I would assume this is allowed. This is because Jeff actually said that the GLAUX library can be used, and if you can use GLAUX, well GLUT is along the same lines as GLAUX in a way. Plus, GLUT -is- open source... So going by my generalised rule - this fits in *g* Also there is a previous contest submission which uses GLUT...
3) Whether you are from NZ or Oz, there are no rules saying that you cannot enter the compo. In fact, a rule such as that could seriously reduce the number of contest entries, so if anything I''m sure Jeff and SKSlayer would be positively buzzing about you entering *g*
4) DirectX - I can''t believe I heard someone say it but they did... They want to use DirectX... Why oh why??? But yeah - this -is- an OpenGL contest. It -would- be kind of silly to use D3D to do the rendering, as the OpenGL library is actually dedicated to rendering and it''s an OpenGL compo! However some things you just can''t do without getting dirty sometimes - so course DX is allowed, just not for rendering!
5) Submit contest entry to Jeff! If you can''t send it to Jeff, send it to SKSlayer! Personally I planned from the start to submit to Jeff because well, it is his site!
6) "I was wondering, what copyrights protect the entries? I mean I''ve spent a lot of time and energy learning how to load and render models, calculate normals and animate etc" *sigh* Code ownership issues always annoy me... You know what? For years I''ve been slaving my guts out trying to help every programmer I can with whatever knowledge I have. I''ve written libraries for all sorts in Visual Basic, I think in about 3 years and several dozen finished projects, I''ve had about 10 ppl thank me for it. I have never seen my name in someone else''s credits either - even though I know hundreds of programmers have downloaded and use my code. You know what? I dont care any more! I''m releasing a game engine I''ve been working on for a couple of months now, and I know a lot of people are going to download it and use it but I''ll be damned if I expect them to thank me for it cause I know they wont! However I am an open source developer - all of my work up to this point has -always- been open source and as free as can be - because that''s how I got my knowledge in the first place. Open source projects and tutorials individuals had kindly put on the internet to educate kids like myself (Uneducated) in the ways of game programming.
7) Just use your intuition (Note: For those who dont know what this is, it''s that niggling thought you get in the back of your mind when thinking about a problem. Were it possible for you to analyse this thought you''d realise it appears to be the answer to your problem - the -logical- answer *g*) and stop leaving pointless posts on here *lol*
Anyways - that''s my bit for the forum for today *g*
P.S. Plz dont flame me! Just venting some thoughts

I think the prize should be dinner with NeHe.
It wouldn't cost 450 dollars... discluding the security guards he would need if any of you guys found out where he is ( you guys know you would all crowd in there and ask for an autograph! )
Does anyone else thinkt that seems like a better prize?
Cmon Jeff, you know the only reason you won't do that as a prize is because your afraid someone will make the next game of the year ( because EVERYONE wants dinner with NeHe! ), and all the big companies will want your head on thier wall
lol... j/k.
I think its cool that you hold contests.. it gives these people reasons to not slack off for a few months, and me a reason to improve so I can enter your next one.
Good luck to all of you guys.

------------------------------Put THAT in your smoke and pipe it
about copyright:
I was just hoping that people would try to learn rather than copy-pasting. I don''t care if I get my name anywhere really, I just wish that more people would try to learn. *sigh*, I suppose you''re right. Most of those people just don''t care.

Baldurk, TheGilb, no .
I emphasise with what you're saying, I've been faced with copy-and-paste cowboys time and time again when I've tried to teach people something.
But, and it's a 10-foot but, they will not be the people around in six months time. They will not be the people getting in the zone and writing awesome code. They will not be the people actually releasing stuff, whether open source, freeware, or commercial.
We will
That's my comfort anyway. It's also why I don't mind giving code away. Maybe 80% of the people who use it will never even read it (I code OO so the code's easy to use like that). But the other 20% will take that code, understand it, and improve it, so it encourages us to get better in turn.
Take comfort in the fact that the "hey, I only started opengl this afternoon and I'm going to have my Quake 3 engine finished by tea time, anybody want to make me some models?" people will be laughed off the stage.
Sorry if this was off-topic. Just thought a few of us needed some external validation

Right on aSe!!! Couldn''t have put it better meself! *lol*
About the theme of the contest being changed though... Just my 2 cents as it were, but I firmly believe that the theme of this contest is really good, and I''m sure that all entree''s will respect the disaster that has happened to America and will not make distasteful references to it.
I for one have done a lot of work coding for this contest, and I would preffer not to have the theme changed. Though I can''t speak for everyone. Essentially it''s up to Jeff, but I''m sure the other entree''s would preffer not to have the theme changed - it''s a good theme with a lot of scope. Besides, no matter what you choose as a theme, I''m sure I could find -someone- who would find it offensive if they took it the wrong way.
I''m sorry if this offends anyone - just my 2 cents that''s all.
-- ANYWAY!!! Back to the olde coding again *g*
