Puzzle design?

Do people who specialize in puzzle design exist? If so, where are they all? Can anyone recommend an article or book about puzzle design? What do puzzle designers want and need from their lead game designer?

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

I suggest you look for stuff by a guy named Scott Kim
http://www.scottkim.com/

He has been generating puzzles of all different forms for years, and often you can find his work on the brain teasers pages of Omni and Discover.

PS, I found your thread in HW, I''m reading your d-doc and hope to be able to spin some fun your way in a day or two.

Oh, thank you. That link may be helpful too - I joined that guy''s mailing list and sent out a mail asking for puzzle designers, bu tI haven''t gotten any replies yet.

Somewhere on the internet, perhaps on this very site, is a truly excellent guide to designing puzzles for games.

It''s written by Bob Bates of Legend Entertainment, called "designing the puzzle" (or words to that effect) and, while it won''t help with everything you need, it helps a whole lot more than any other article I have yet found.

Check out the article archives on this site, it will be in the design section if it''s there.

Here it is off Scott Kim''s site:

It also looks like PrimaTech used this paper as Chapter 6 for their book about game design.

Lots of good fundamentals in that article. Nothing too meaty, but I found it pretty groovy. Lucky for me a great majority of the ideas are already familiar!
