Posts being ignored

HI, Just wondering what to do if my questions are being ignored. Do, I just twiddle my thumbs or ask why they are being ignored or overlooked, for the most recent two have not even been looked at by anyone apparently, so why is this and what should I do?
In general there are 4 common reasons why posts are ignored:

1) They are in the wrong section (Which means that the people capable of answering them might miss them (For some questions there is no right section on this board and its better to ask elsewhere)).
2) They are poorly written or you havn't done your homework before asking the question, (There are tons of bad questions on these boards and after a while people tend to just ignore them).
3) They are difficult to answer and you need to be patient. (For harder to answer questions it can take a few days before you get an answer and even simple questions can take several hours, this is a web forum, not a IM client after all)
4) nondescriptive topic names, make sure the people who are able to answer your question know that they can answer it before they actually read your post, (if you make a topic called "Help me please !!!" noone will know if they have the knowledge required to actually help you unless they take the time to read your post which causes alot of people to just ignore it)

The voices in my head may not be real, but they have some good ideas!

If a topic has zero views, in general there are a few possibilities to consider:

  • Your expectation of how often people view threads is wrong. These two threads are only a few hours/a day old. This isn't very long
  • The thread title is putting people off/not attracting them. Your titles are a bit vague. Also, it seems like maybe you are just throwing some keywords together - "Matrix Shader Problem"... what's a "matrix shader"? This doesn't really make sense. Try something like "Terrain moves correctly relative to camera but models don't - problem with matrix in shader?"
  • The view counter is wrong/a bit laggy. I've now viewed your threads, and the view count still appears to be zero

Also, I think that your initial post to the DirextX and XNA forum was probably not the optimum place. You may be using DirectX/XNA, but really your problem is a general one in understanding how world/projection/view matrices are supposed work, and how they interact with shaders. I think that your post would have been better placed in For Beginners, as a) that forum is more active and gets more traffic from people looking to answer questions, b) it is probably not a really niche question which requires a DirectX specialist/expert to answer, and c) even if somebody who only uses OpenGL or some other library could not entirely fix your issue, they could probably still provide some useful insight or point you in the direction of some online resources.

If, after a reasonable period of time (normally at least 24-48 hours) your topic still hasn't received replies, you might try making a reply yourself providing additional details and asking if there's anything else people might need to know to respond.

Other than that, keeping in mind everything said above should help.

About the whole 0 views thing. It appears as if it's stuck until someone replies, at least before the first reply. Once someone replies, you'll probably have hundreds of views. Forum bug perhaps?

[edit] After a quick look, I was unable to find any topics with 0 replies and at least one view.

I've noticed this before too. I thought this actually came up as a "bug report" once before, but I can't seem to find the topic.

Yeah, I believe I've been told about that glitch before in one of my own posts that wasn't getting answers a while back. I think it's like people say: until you get a reply, the view counter will be 0. Afterwards, it'll show all of the views since it was made.

The DirectX subforum is the most misleading one. I think at least half, or more questions are NOT directly (or at all) related to DirectX.
I don't know DirectX, so I very rarely look into that forum, yet, I still could solve some of the problems and think about many of them in depth (but usually I'm ninja'd so I don't bother)

(maybe I'm biased, because I use OpenGL, but I didn't experience this that much in the OpenGL forum)

It should be noted though - if you see a post that doesn't belong in a forum/subforum -- report it so that attention can get paid to it and it moved to a more appropriate forum. Mods do a great job on this site but that doesn't mean they will catch everything and highlighting an issue such as a post being in the wrong forum is one way to help an OP get an answer from the relevant sources of information by being placed in the right forum.

Note: it will probably help: if you can identify the forum the post should belong to.

From what i understand of this bug as well, it will continue to remain static until someone other than the original poster replies as well. In case of my info thread on the mario marathon, it would only update views after i replied again. In other threads I started, it would update periodically after someone else had replied. Apparently there were many views of the thread, but it never showed until i issued a status update.

This topic is closed to new replies.
