Not bad, but don't see the point in the large trackpad if you've got a touchscreen.

@noisecrime: I think I see what you are saying, though I'm curious to know what specifically you refer to. I mean, if the worse you can say about something is that it's overpowered, I'm not sure that's a problem smile.png

I mean that they usually come with far too many features, both in the OS and hardware that the general non-computer users simply don't need or understand, which often inflates the price. I guess its come from buying laptops for various family members, based on their initial requirements, only to learn that it was barely used for a fraction of what it was capable of. The amount of laptops in the family that I end up fixing, mostly because of rubbish being installed or the user simply never shutting down the machine is just beyond a joke. If I could get most of my family onto a tablet I could see my life being much easier too ;)

So I guess really what i've experienced is that many people don't need a general computing device and as such these new devices can be seriously cut down in many respects, but unfortunately there are a couple of tasks such as spreadsheets or word processing which I find don't currently work well with tablets. Get that area fixed and you're onto a winner (all IMHO of course).

I also see a move towards having a central NAS in the home, which is great for storage, so little need for large harddrives or even large storage capacity. I recently got an iPad, my first actual mobile device of any kind. I got a decent deal on a 16gb iPad2 and was worried about the amount of storage, but actually since using I see no real problem with lack of storage. Obviously if you want to have a large collection of music and films on the device permanently you'd want more memory, but to be honest I only play a fraction of the media I own anyway, so can actually see it being far better to simply move stuff on and off periodically.

Again i'll point out this is not a viable solution for the people who populate gamedev and need a laptop machine, but for what I feel is the vast majority of computer users, who actually don't really use it as a computer, but more a media/social/browsing/mail device.

However I don't see tablets as a complete replacement, part of their appeal in terms of size, lightness etc, means that you do have to cut certain hardware features such as dvd, storage etc, so there is still a need for a PC.

Using a touchscreen is awkward when in laptop mode. Your hand is right next to the touchpad, and it is usually much more efficient to use that than to move your hand up to the screen.

Touch screens are a great idea.

Bah, I can't argue against efficiency, its the one thing that drives me mad when simple over-sights waste so much time.
However I'm not overly found of touchpads either and I can't help feeling it just looks wrong on that product.

The touchpad on the first version was questionable. I hope that they have improved it in the newer versions. I might trade in my "The new iPad" for an infinity once it's available.
i don't know if this really fly - a 13 inch tablet. People already complain about the weight of the new ipad, i don't really know how people would react to a 13 inch tablet. but i need to hold it in my hand to test and feel it.

i'm a proud owner of the new ipad, and i'm totally happy with it. it was just awesome. no wonder it sells like hot cakes. and this is from a pc user with android smart phone. and it already did what i wish happened with my android, being a smart phone, but never did.

1. OS update (in just a few days ago, ios 5.1.1 is released. my new ipad was updated with just a few touch.).
2. Total / full back-up. Install itunes. select backup. My android phone can't do that. only the contact can be back-up. the rest have to be copied manually. and i once have to reset the phone to factory setting (due to the infamous automatically drop calls bug). not only i have to keep note of the app installed. later i have to install it one by one.

wasn't it strange that you have to root your phone just to be able to do full backup. seriously?

when it come to the ipad, steve jobs followed the 80/20 rule. just follow the money. who cares about people that want side loading, etc, etc, etc. just focus on the masses that generate most return.

the new ipad is fun and the experience is awesome.

but as far as this 13 inch tablet, i know my hand would not like it (or my shoulder).

Full backup is a fantastic way to steal data. Not just a few emails, everything. Imagine an app that could simply transfer everything to some remote server.

It's would be same as doing 'dd' on a PC. Only way to prevent it is to make such access impossible by design.

Imagine an app that could simply transfer everything to some remote server.

That's why it shouldn't be an app. Backup built into the OS (or via a vendor-certified app) is the way to go...
