Hi,

I'm attending university here in Sweden but I just noticed I can't include two of the courses in the program (Computer Networks, Network Security) because I lack the later Math prerequisite from College - and now I'm worried it'll make a too big impact on my degree if I can't include the Network courses.

I can study Math over the summer to complete the requirement but I've tried that particular course before and failed.

The program includes:

1. Introduction for several programming languages
   
2. Object-oriented programming in C++
   
3. Programming of Web applications
   
4. Java for C++ programmers
   
5. Databases, modelling and implementation
   
6. Java for mobile units
   
7. Webprogramming
   
8. Application development for Android
   
9. [s]Computer Networks[/s]
   
10. [s]Network security[/s]
    
11. XML
    
12. Artificial Intelligense for agents
    
13. Designpatterns in C++
    
14. Java-enterprise development with the J2EE-standard
    
15. Methods and tools in software development
    

So I'll be missing two of them.

What do you think? Am I screwed? There are no other network related courses in the program and I really enjoy Network security, especially the higher level details in applications.

A class solely on XML? Where are the algorithms and data structures?

The program looks like one of the prevalent code monkey courses that teaches you a lot of technologies that will die out a quarter through your career.

Thanks for your input! Yeah, that's one class for XML.. I've never been a big fan of XML but figured it wouldn't hurt as they have it in the program and I see lots of mention about it in job descriptions.

Do you think I'll lose too much by not attending the networking-related classes?
Are there any good sites that mention recommendations on what to study?

Of course you're not "screwed"! Your life is not over just because you haven't taken those prerequisite math courses. Don't horriblize everything.
Game programmers are specialists - no two are constructed alike. Some are very mathematical, and some aren't. Some are experts in network technology, some are not.
You can consider taking those prerequisite courses, and you can talk to the department advisor about maybe getting the prerequisite waived.
Your world is not about to end.

Hi Tom, thanks for chiming in. I just want to be able to stand a chance at recruitment after I graduate. I know it's difficult as it is, but I don't want to paint myself into a corner.
Maybe I could focus on networking in my exam assignment. Can I show that to a potential recruiter or do they only ask for grades?

What you did in an assignment is not very interesting.
Grades are also not very interesting.
Build a strong portfolio apart from your classwork.
