Making 2D Art for Mobile (iPhone/Android) Games

Recently I started sketching again, and found out that I can draw, ink, and color pretty nice 2D images of chibi/cute characters, which would be perfect for 2D Games for most Mobile Platforms.

I mostly do my art by first doing a sketch, then scanning it. I then load this in Photoshop and then ink over it (Pen Tool). Then I add multiple layers for colors/shading and the output is pretty decent.

Now I didn't really start out thinking that these would be suitable for Mobile games, so I have no idea what size the sprites should be. I am particularly interested in making art for iPhone games. But I have no idea of what resolutions to use :
- What is the full resolution of iPhones?
- What size should a character sprite be?
- What size would other props or backgrounds need to be?

I can draw most of the art assets needed to make a decent iPhone game, but the problem is the size is wayy too huge and would look ugly when resized. Are there some tips out there for me? :)

PS. I know that Illustrator has an overall edge over Photoshop in this application. But tried Illustrator, and the fact that I have to close paths on my Pen Tool is kinda hard for me to get used to (I usually dont close my paths on PS, I just stroke and fill it with my brush) Also my tablet is really bad to use the brush tool. So I would like to do this in Photoshop in the neatest way possible. :)
