Newbie questions on Linux
1. Linux is supposed to be free software right?
SO where can I get it?
2. Can Linux be installed into another portion of the hard drive?
3. Is it messy to install Linux or is it a simple visual installation (changing things in AUTOEXEC.BAT really freaks my out)
1) Yes, Linux is free, as in free speech. Yes, most distro''s happen to also be free as in free beer. You can download a distro from the website of the company that makes it, or you can try something like tucows.com.
2) Yes, it can be installed on another partition.
3) It depends with distro you pick. Linux has no standard installation code, all it is is a kernel, the distro determines the installation method 100%. RedHat and Mandrake have graphical installations. Off topic: Linux has no Autoexec.bat, but it does have a couple of files that do the same thing

linux is not windows
its not going to do stupid shit like messing with your startup files.
as far as places to get linux:
www.slackware.com
www.debian.org
you are probably looking for a an ISO file you can burn to a cd and boot off of to install. you must install linux on its own separate partition (theres exceptions).
linux is a complete different operating system and has nothing to do with windows or the way windows does things at all. starting out, you are going to know less about what your doing than your grandmas does about windows, but youll learn fast.

Before someone reignites the distro wars, go to:
Linux Online;
Linux.com; and
The Linux Documentation Project
You''ll find links to and reviews/previews of virtually all distros, info on recent software and documentation on Linux, GNU and associated applications.
