I combine source control and external backups by using external source control. Otherwise, I have to export my source controlled repos into cloud storage seperately, which for a team could be done using a script, but this doesnt backup the repo history. Since every project I use is stored in an SVN repo, an additional backup source is unnecessary.

I have created a subversion repository on a DropBox folder. Simple, fast and easy to use.
Ubuntu One is great if there are files that you want to have access to from multiple machines or even your Android phone. The auto sync software works very well on the Ubuntu OS and the Windows version is coming very soon. Watch the Ubuntu One blog or follow their Twitter account for details.

I may have to give it another shot; I tried it over a year ago and found that it was running some service constantly in the background bringing me up to 100 percent cpu usage.

While Ubuntu One is good for cloud storage of things like media files, you;re better off using an actual product that was developer for offline project backup, like a DVCS. There are many good free DVCS hosts out there. If you were willing to consider Ubuntu One, you should also consider using bzr (a DVCS) and Launchapd (project hosting) from the same vendor. You will benefit.
