I don't know the exact chemistry of what I have here, I just know it's some kind of iron oxide [font="Arial"](I'm thinking Fe[sub]3[/sub]O[sub]4[/sub], b[/font]ecause of this description of preparation). The video above is from a more liquid version, I eventually got it boiled down to a thicker sludge than even that and it was much more reactive. I don't have a strong electromagnet available right now (I'll build one tonight), but a neodymium magnet was pulling the surface of the liquid from about 2mm away.
What was especially interesting was the fact that I used a microwave to boil the water off. It got to a point where I could hear arcing while I was microwaving it. When I removed the container, there were small flecks on the surface of the liquid, a lighter color than the liquid itself. They were magnetic, they were solid, and they rolled up and folded a bit like very thin foil when I pinched them. I'm pretty sure it was pure iron.

Ferrofluids are just fuild ferromagnetic materials, like small iron magnets in suspenion. Do not drink while in microwave, lol;)
