Implementation of guns in an MMORPG setting.

Would you think that a classicly medieval Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, like WoW or RS, would be better with guns, like actual modern guns rather than gunpowder guns from the 17th century or w/e? I think it would appeal both to WoW fans and FPS fans alike, right ? Of course there would be some way to balance it out so if you want to use a sword to kill someone, you could do it without running a huge risk of getting shot, like making guns really expensive in the game or needing an insane skill level to wield a gun.
In a mediaeval setting then modern guns would ruin everything, especially if FPS style.

However, using muskets or blunderbuss 'black powder' weapons like normal weapons would fit in better.

Low accuracy stops them being insta-gib. Slow reloads makes them one-shot weapons. Small range stops people sniping at massive ranges.

Using them like a normal weapon (click on target, PC shoots, calc damge) would take into account skills (max range, accuracy, damage) and stop them being overly based on twitch gameplay.

No, no, not FPS style, I just said it might attract FPS players to build our fanbase. The guns themselves would be very powerful and accurate, like you would expect from a gun, but the rub is that they would be extremely expensive to start (maybe 10 mill gold compared to a powerful 20k sword) and you would need a high marksman skill or w/e, like the max pretty much, in order to use it. Also you'd need to buy expensive ammo, that way you don't instantly dominate the game as soon as you can afford a gun.
Historically, though, guns weren't hugely expensive -- A price given for a matchlock musket in the early 1600s is 16 shillings.

For comparison, a good helmet for a footsoldier would be maybe 3 - 4 shillings.

Gunpowder was the difficult part. It wasn't that it was especially expensive, but nitrate was hard to obtain -- there were traditionally two sources; importing it from mines overseas and making it by steeping compost heaps in urine. The former was difficult when a war was on and the second was apart from the obvious also time consuming and produced small yields.

Most wargames systems for the 30 years war and English Civil Wars, for example, have ammunition limitation rules because of this.

So you could limit the availability of ammunition as a way of restricting musketry.

Until the arrival of rifles in the early 1800s, the accuracy of muskets made them not especially useful unless deployed in mass anyway. Marksmanship was not really a useful skill.

FPS fans aren't necessarily fans of guns, they simply like that particular gameplay. I like FPS and I've tried a lot of MMORPG, but I wouldn't like to play a MMORPG with guns (I usually play with healers or mages).

I think just having a high cost will not stop players from completely owning the game. People go on and on about the balance between classes for a reason. Gun too expensive to buy? No problem, RLT for some more gold. Skill level too low? No problem, hire a bot to level it for you in an even quicker time. Now you can go and own everyone in the game, and it only took a few days. A week if you decided to take your time.

If anything I am against guns in general in medieval settings when it comes to fantasy rpg's. A bow and some arrows will do just fine for me. I don't think this idea will quite work in the way you want it to. As someone mentioned before, just because you are an FPS player does not mean you like guns, and a game having modern guns is not enough to make me want to play. I play FPS's for the gameplay itself, not the items within.

I think a wider range of weapons would be awesome, there are many primitive weapons that I've not yet seen used in a game before. But taking a modern weapon and putting it into a medieval one would take quite a bit of explaining and even more magic. It might even ruin the game for some and reduce the player base.

My current game: MMORPGRTSFPSRLG. Read: Some sort of mmorpg with a special something that will make everyone want to play but I wont tell you what it is.

For serious though, my goal is to create a MMO. What kind? Not sure yet. MMO games are my passion and it's a goal of mine to change the industry for the better. Do I know it's an unrealistic goal? Yes. Do I care? Heck no.
