This is an old story and even back then it was twisted to fit what some people want to believe. Some superstitious/fundamentalist villagers (part of the vigilante squads) turned the goat into the police saying that it was "the robber" and the police held it in hopes an owner would come to claim it. The goat was not arrested, the goat was not charged, etc.

But of course, the real version doesn't sound as funny does it?
