Hi ,
For a graphics/tools programmer candidate ( targeting game industry ) , which modelling tool ( Maya or Max )
would you suggest to learn and get experience ?
I know what I am asking is very general , but I don`t have any urgent criterias at the moment.
I am working on my 3d graphics engine to build my portfolio. And I know 3DSMax very little.
Also I`d like to learn what kind of tools/pluging/scripts are mostly developed for use of artists inside 3DSMax/Maya in game industry
Which modelling tool for a graphics/tool programmer
Quite an interesting field if you ask me.
Why not specialize in more than one package? it'll only bring benefits to you and it's a big plus in your resumé.
The more the merrier, I'd say (makes it easier for you to learn anything new that's required of you).
The actual requirements are usually listed in job descriptions at the "Career" areas in studio's websites and job listings. It's a great way to know what they expect from the average technical artist \ tools programmer.

Gamasutra is a bit more formal, so it might be easier to search there.
Good luck.

The most common is probably exporters for the data but if you're using the modeller as a level editor you might benefit from plugins to quickly add things like spawnpoints etc aswell(Making scripts for this tends to be fairly trivial though). I think its quite common however to use intermediary formats like collada or fbx and use external converters (or have the engine import and convert those) rather than writing export plugins for each 3d modeller in use so as an aspiring tools programmer you probably shouldn't focus too much on a specific modelling tool but rather focus on how to create an efficient and flexible toolchain.
