Time to start distributing who moved my cheese en masse.

I always go directly to the index page, so I never look at the main page.

It took me ten minutes to find those "thumps up" icons. I saw a list of whatever articles (or whatevers) about Jesus (judging by the icons) but couldn't for the life find those thumbs up icons. When I realized those Jesus icons are the said icons.

YAY!

Same here, there is just so much crap on the front page.
"You insulted me!" I did not say that in the private message Tom Sloper!

We're going to look at ways to better format the news. There is actually less information on the front page than the old design, but the style we're using appears to be causing it to look more cluttered. In fact, we're looking to eventually reorganize the front page altogether to better present information.

Yes. I think it's mostly about that.

Also note that having a "like" button in the excerpt of a linked news article is kind of useless because it will be read in it's entirety in another site which is actually the place where the article should be rated. To make it work as you pretend you should add a top/side frame (ala google images) encompassing the foreign site where the logo of gamedev is still present and also gamedev's options for rating the the article after having actually read it.

<frameset rows = "5%, *">
<frame src ="top.html" />
<frame src ="/news/redir.php?g=4584fc84dd1a91d9d5bd1969b029c371" />
</frameset>

Sigh, why does everything on the internet have to be votable?

I loved reading the dailies even if I didn't follow a single link in the post. Gaiiden's adventures in Journal Land were awesome too. Sometimes I don't want to select my own news, but just read what other people that know what they're talking about have filtered for me. As much as I love their community, I don't think the front page should be like Reddit, I have a news reader to aggregate articles from relevant sources. I feel it should be more like Slashdot: short and to the point articles geared towards the GameDev community and perhaps the game development industry at large.

And I guess you can add vote buttons if you want, even though I don't see any reason for doing it. In any case, I feel it's almost an insult to the reader to make them this big: people will figure out they can vote even if they are a little smaller, for example Facebook's like buttons are pretty tiny.

If they are going to leave it like it is now, at least they should consider replacing the icon for something more honest like:

[size="1"]LIKE IT MOTHERFUKA!

This is definitely an interesting idea. We'll consider it. ;) One thing is for certain, nobody is coming away from viewing it without the realization that we want viewers to participate in the process of upvoting news. If we can get that going more readily, we can switch over to the "Top News in 24 Hours" format and show just the best stuff to people by default.

Can you get rid of the thumbs up and like, I don't really see what value it brings ??? The fact I or anyone else personally likes or dislikes an item of news brings what to the site? It feels way too social media, I think it's wrong for a site that is supposed to be informative and educational to be dressed up like a social platform...we always say use the right tool for the right job...

For me I come to Gamedev to read news and get help on issues I have relating to game development not the industry in general.

I'm not quite following this logic. The industry affects how games are developed, and vice versa. GameDev.net is about all things game development, and it's important to know what's happening in the industry as well as how to make games.

The value the voting system brings is customization, which appears to actually address your complaint. To start, you will be able to filter by the top rated news and hide the news you don't care about. In time, that means we will be able to start customizing news according to your interests. It also means you can find out what other GDNet visitors view as important or relevant to game development.

Filter on an individual basis or filter as a group Gamedev users? I can't see how you could easily classify and filter the news to give good converage, what I like and think interesting one day may not interest me the next, information about certain areas of the industry, certain companies and people may interest me but others don't now but may do in the future. If we are filtering as a group then undoubtably peoples opinions will differ. It seems more of an all or nothing propositon because if there is a middle ground people will still go elsewhere to check to see if they have missed any relevant news to them.

Yes you are right the game industry drives development and vice versa, but I come to game dev for it's community and the information it can give me on the technical side of game development. This is why I use the site, if I want to know about the industry in general then there are other sites out there that I can get that information.

I liked the format of the GD news as it was and happy to see only a few posts a week,but I don't want to see the site watered down by the industry in general, you have something fairly unique, a good community that delivers excellent informative resources. I think expanding what you have is a much better alternative than trying to becoming a one stop shop for all Game Industry related news.
