Open Source Maps?
I need a game map for a little FPS tech demo I'm writing and was wondering if there are any websites that have a database of free community created maps?
Not open source - but NASA "Visible Earth" images are free to use on a commercial basis, just simply give credit where it is due: http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/
Alternatively there is http://www.planiglobe.com/omc_set.html which is licensed under Creative Commons license.
For maps, try http://www.openstreetmap.org/ which again is licensed under Creative Commons.

There is a list here of OSS Quake 3 derived games. You can start there.

I'm not sure how that is suppose to help but it did give me an idea. If my client downloads the maps from an outside server I think that would avoid me being responsible for redistributing the maps. In turn I would be protected under the DMCA. Am I right? If so what servers can I download quake 3 and doom 3 maps from?
Pretty old stuff but Simon 'Sock' O'Callaghan gives source with some of his maps such as this.
Benoit 'Bal' Stordeur also includes .map in some of his maps such as this.
Besides the age, I think those assets still look fairly good, those are really good artists.
The .BSP is too much garbled for any serious use for me... hopefully it should be possible to convert map-->obj or something (fairly sure blender can do).
I'm also interested in some sharing!

Because you can't read? I gave you a list of open source quake 3 games. That means free maps, like you asked for in the first post.

Wrong, I apparently read better than you do. Though the games are open source their content is under different licenses.
