Good Web Host for Portfolio?

hi, can anyone recommend a good Web Host for creating a general e-portfolio?
I normally use NearlyFreeSpeech for smaller sites like a portfolio would be -- the pay-for-what-you-use pricing generally works out very cheap for projects like that. The site control panel can be a little less friendly than that provided by other hosts however, and you're pretty much on your own for getting things working if you need to change any settings. They are however very reliable, and hosted sites always seem pretty snappy.

If you're looking for something a little more mainstream with a more traditional control panel and support options then DreamHost are a pretty solid option; reliable and a variety of packages to choose from.

Did you have any particular needs that might be out-of-the-ordinary?

Hope that helps! smile.gif

Nope, just a general website to show off some of the stuff I've done (screenshots, vids etc.) and perhaps to distribute some of the free games/demo's I've made.
Any web host will get this job done well; for your kind of work, it's just a matter of how much you want to pay for uptime/performance. Dreamhost is super cheap, but I've had numerous outages and slow times due to the way they way oversubscribe their servers. On the other end of the spectrum, a VPS from MediaTemple costs about $50/mo these days and is rock-solid dedicated power. A reasonably low-budget alternative with a good reputation is A Small Orange, whose plans start at $25/year for minimal space and bandwidth.
Been using 1portfolio.com for a few years based on recommendation from this site. I've had no noticeable down time and the prices are hard to beat. $8 a year for 300mb of space and 5gb of bandwidth a month.

Sounds like NearlyFreeSpeech would probably be suitable -- I've also heard good things about 1portfolio, but I've never used them personally.

I use Dreamhost for all my hosting these days. The plan I'm on works out to $10/month, and I just pay for a year at a time. As a loyalty bonus, they've bumped my specs significantly (storage, upload, download, etc) several times, and IIRC, you also get a standard monthly increase in specs that is smaller. You also get, I think, 2 free domain registrations per year of hosting, which I've used to extend my main domain registrations and acquire new ones.

Support has been great, and there's a ton of information in the knowlege-base Wiki -- if you ever want to install a package that's not supported by their one-click install system, somebody has probably already done it and written a guide in the wiki. For a portfolio site, they support several standard blog packages (Wordpress, et all) and CMS systems that would perfectly suit a technical or artistic portfolio.

On top of that, they have a system in place where you can sell files if you wish, they're always adding new features, and their monthly newsletter is both informative and hilarious (in a geeky sort of way). $10/month isn't bottom-barrel pricing when it comes to web-hosting, but I'm very happy to pay that for the level of service they supply.

throw table_exception("(? ???)? ? ???");

I'm with Hostgator, no complaints so far, everything works great. I hear their support is really good too, although I've never had to use it. They have live chat with a waiting time of less then 4min.
I use godaddy for my domain registration and their hosting service for a wordpress server. I find that wordpress has an awesome interface for building your portfolio and they have some great themes to choose from and you could make your own if you wanted. I paid 9.99/yr for domain and 4.99/mo hosting. They have different plans as well to fit your needs.
You could try using weebly.com, as well, most of the features are free, and then if you want more, you can go ahead and buy the full version. I use the free version myself for me e-portfolio, and I'm happy with it.
