Unless a company is used to doing it, sponsoring work visas can be a big hurdle. It can be a lot of time and effort and ultimately more risk to the company if things don't work out.
The 'parachute' of a trip back home was probably not the best move. I've never heard of that before and even the mention of it starts putting doubt into my mind on how committed this person may be.
But overall you really don't know. Perhaps they found someone else at the last minute who was equally qualified but local. Or they had bad financial news and cannot afford to fund new positions.
