no I frigging dont want to update!

So i open WinAmp, and immediately pops up and tells me there is a new version available - do i want to update? Well, lets think about it for a second, if I am opening winamp, the chances are its because I want to listen to music. Therefore, do you really think I want to spend 15 minutes downloading, installing and restarting the app? Erm... NO!

And as for Adobe, Java etc etc constantly asking me if I want to update, you get the same response! I'll quite happily stick with whatever version is installed until the day comes I open a PDF and it wont open properly, THEN I will update you!

You know, SP3 is like 300MB security updates and shit. SP1 is a pretty cool guy. Eh has unpatched IE6 and doesn't afraid of anything

There was a lot more than security updates between SP1 and SP3. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113

And unpatched IE is like turbo-charging your prius.

It would be nice if Microsoft offered a standard way for applications to check for updates, then, as at the moment each app handles its own update procedure. Some aren't so bad (Opera lets you download in the background and install updates when you're ready, and the installer is extremely fast) though most tend towards the irritating or buggy (I've never had a machine where Java's one works properly - its notification icon tells me I have an update, but clicking that crashes the updater) or downright rude (Chrome installs a constantly-running background process with scheduled tasks to keep that process running if you try to remove it).

It's quite simple... My answer to security is not to use it for general Internet useage, my answer to unpatched IE6 is not to use IE,
I have a linux box for that.
It's worked out pretty good... One of my boxes has the same XP install since 2003....

My windows boxes are for 2 things, playing video games, and vs2005. If i use the internet on it, I use seamonkey with all the ad & flash blockers, and I pretty much only go on safe sites, Ogre3d.org,SF.net,Wikipedia,Gmail etc...

That being said I used to repair computers for a living... No matter how much Anti Virus Software, or how many updates and patches you install, people still get stuff... It's the user, not the computer.

As for why sp1 is better than sp3... Bloat... SP1 is about 2% to 5% faster, less shit means more power for me to use. Plus you can't tell me the sp3 search or IE8 or even the wireless connection software is any better than SP1, they're shitty, slow, and bloated.

fair enough. I wouldn't consider fixing ~800 bugs shit per se, but to each his own.

because IE is environmentally friendly but slow and lacking features that other browsers have in spades.

I think your sarcasm detector needs calibration. I'd never use SP1 on a modern, internet-accessible machine. Hell, I'd never leave a SP1 machine on my home network - I'd either nuke it from orbit or keep it isolated in a DMZ.

Saying that SP1 is faster than SP3 is like saying that Windows 98 is faster than XP. Ugh, yeah, it is, if you are willing to pay the price.

Note that Seamonkey won't protect you from exploits. Ever heard of the notorious Windows JPEG exploit[1]? It affects everything and requires nothing but a malicious picture to infect you. The ultimate fly-by exploit: no antivirus can catch it, no browser can stop it, just visit a malicious page and you are done.

Have fun using SP1 to browse the internet. :)

[1] No, not this one, but too bored to find the correct one.

I detect a slight reading comprehension problem...
If you go back and reread what I wrote you will find that I do not (it's even in bold) use XP SP1 for general internet browsing...
Even so, if read a little past that sentence, say to the second or third paragraph you'll see that the only time I use the internet on that machine is to browse Ogre's wiki, or check my email.

Yes I've heard of the jpeg exploits... still it's the user, not the machine. If you go to Bulgarian rollar-blading nuns pr0n sites in any version of windows, you;re a retard. If you go to Wikipedia or ogre.org/wiki or gmail, your not going to run into that issue.

As for SeaMonkey, it is set to block all images from any source that isn't from the domain which it's connected too...

On an additional note, i used a windows 98SE machine all the way up until i built my latest box in 2007...

None of these machines have AV software either... it's a waste of processing power...

I like Opera's approach.

First time it tells you there's an update, and asks you for the next time:

  1. Download silently and install automatically (which happens next time you open Opera, without any user confirmation)
  2. Download silently then ask to install.
  3. Ask to download & install
  4. Never ask
In all cases, there's a small progress bar when downloading on the bottom which I can opt to stop (even if choice 1 or 2 was made) downloading.

If I've chosen 1 or 2, it will be downloaded next time.

Note all this happens when you open the browser. It doesn't install a stupid application that starts on boot and remains on background forever.

I love this approach, it satisfies all tastes and doesn't bloat your PC.
