How are your eyes?

Talking out of my ass here.

Is it just me, or is wearing glasses a symptom of nerdom? I have to actually search for people who do not wear glasses these days. It's almost as if we are becoming a near-sighted species due to staring contests with monitors.

How badly has your eyesight degraded over the time you spent in the Information Age? Has it degraded at all?
I spend the most time in front of a monitor out of my immediate family, yet am the only one who doesn't wear glasses. Read into that what you will! [smile]

I wear glasses, but after 6 years of increased daily computer use my optometrist advised me to not bother spending the money on new lenses, as the change was so small that it would be next to impossible to notice.

@benry: Argh, I envy you! Life without glasses for me is like looking up while standing under a waterfall.
Personally, I love wearing glasses. I couldn't tell you the number of times a very serious injury was reduced to a minor one by having my glasses take the brunt of the damage.

Mind you, this advantage is mostly a side effect of stupid friends.

On the other hand if they shatter it can actually be quite a bit worse!

I was playing softball in 8th grade and a mean mean foul ball hit the catcher in his glasses and they cut around his eye pretty badly. Without them it would have hurt, but he never would have needed stitches.

For the lens types I have always used, if whatever hits them hits hard enough to shatter, then I likely would have died either way. And at that point, I'm fairly sure I wouldn't give a damn.

I have had the inside of a lens spall from an impact, but a bit of low velocity dust is far better than a high velocity bolt.

(And this kids, is one of the reasons why you should wear a dual layered lens for airsoft. Most paintball masks are NOT actually safe for use, and even a lot of 'airsoft' face shields aren't actually suitable. The small size and hardness of a pellet or airsoft BB mean they put a lot of force in a small area. This in turn can cause a small part of the inside of the mask to 'pop' out and enter the eye.)

Also, standard reading glasses are not a replacement for proper safety glasses. If you work with anything that involves flying bits of stuff, wear proper, fully shielded eye protection that fits securely. You might look foolish while wearing them, but you can take safety gear off at the end of the day. Hard to take a scar and missing eyeball off when you're heading out for a night on the town.

I'm nearsighted. I can't really gauge how much staring at a monitor has hurt my vision. It changes slightly every few years though. However, I have an astigmatism which makes things blurry anyway. Since I'm 21 at the moment I've been told my vision won't change as much since my eyeball basically stopped growing.

Are you even sure that staring at a monitor can change your vision? I don't see how it could.

Also if you haven't already buy transition lenses. Automatic sunglasses are nice. :)
I've been spending a lot of my time on the computer for a long time, and although my vision isn't absolutely perfect, it's good. I don't need glasses at all.

From what I've seen, looking at monitors/TV isn't linked to causing bad vision, against the popular belief.
