Is it possible to by Visual Studio 2010 Premium separately

Are you sure its free, Microsoft normally offer hefty discounts to students, but I'm not aware of it being free. You could always buy it and put it in a brother/sister/nephew/neice's name.

Alternatively, startup companies can get free access to MSDN for 3 years, while established companies can sign up for a microsoft action pack, which for £300 a year gives you 10 copies of most microsoft products (Windows 7, Office etc.) and single licenses for Windows Server and SQL server.
